I'm not sure why I am posting a discussion. I have never started a thread on any forum, ever. I live in Belmont County, and have many friends here. This post is for my friends in Belmont County.
For those GMS members who thrive on controversy, do not engage me. I will ignore you.
The Rice Energy folks are drillers. I doubt that they have $400 million in the bank. There are people out there who have money, but don't know how to drill. It's called a business relationship.
I have no dog in this fight. I don't live in Western Belmont County, and won't make any money on Rice Energy leases.
I am however, a mining engineer. I worked in underground mines from Beallsville to Hopedale.
Rice Energy had the guts to lease over Murray Energy reserves. I give them credit for that.
I have no idea how it will all turn out, but hope for the best.
By the way, Rice Energy has recorded 983 leases in Belmont County in the last year. That's for real.

Permalink Reply by John OBrien, landowner advocate on April 21, 2013 at 12:15am Bob Murray is one of the greediest men on planet earth. If he can stop this, he will.
His actions in his mines out west and in WV when men were trapped underground proves this.
He knew of unsafe conditions at his mines, but profit was paramount in his conduct.
Permalink Reply by ryan brooks on April 21, 2013 at 4:10pm I agree most companies will not lease above Murray Energy operations. There is a significant amount of property available for lease in Wayne Twp in Belmont Co. that connects to property in Sunsbury Twp in Monroe that has not been leased but has had many offers but shy away. I believe it is due to the fact that AEC was recently mining this area.

AboutWhat makes this site so great? Well, I think it's the fact that, quite frankly, we all have a lot at stake in this thing they call shale.
