A few weeks ago, while riding around our property in Belmont County, we came across a bunch of trees marked with orange ribbons, on our property and going into the neighbors property as well. No names or numbers on any of them. I have made numerous phone calls to Chesapeake (who holds our lease and has yet to get back to me), my attorney and the ODNR. No one has any answers for me. At this point I don't know who else to contact to try and get some answers. We only visit our property on the weekends and I am afraid that we're going to show up one weekend to cut timber. Any thoughts or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Do you have deer hunters in the area? Any chance bow hunters are staking out yardages from a specific point so they know the approximate distance of the shot. Is your property posted?

We own 40 acres and our property is posted with private property signs all over. The MarkWest line is going in within a quarter of a mile from our cabin. I'm sure there are plenty of deer hunters in our area but we have never had an issue before and we've owned the property since the 70's. The trees that are marked have no real rhyme or reason to their placement. Some are in pretty thick foliage (whoever placed the ribbons had to work pretty hard to get to some of these trees). They all pretty much stay up on our top ridge and run a path to our neighbors property. The neighbor, whose property is also marked, currently has wells being drilled on his property in Harrison County. I heard a rumor Gulfport was looking to place a well on his property next to us. Unfortunately the phone number I have for this neighbor is no longer in service and I am unable to find another one for him.

YOU COULD GO TO WWW.WHITEPAGES.COM AND ENTER HIS NAME. IT MIGHT GIVE YOU HIS NEW NUMBER IF ITS A LAND LINE OR THE ADDRESS OF HIS RESIDENCE...YOU COULD WRITE TO HIM.

This is also a good note to put in lease...you want 24 hours notice when anyone is going to be on your property.  WE CAUGHT SOME GUYS IN THE MIDDLE OF MY SONS PROPERTY MARKING AN OLD PIPELINE.  WE DIDN'T EVEN KNOW IT EXISTED.  HOWEVER YOU DON'T WANT PEOPLE JUST DOING WHATEVER THEY WANT TOO.  THEY ALSO HAD PEOPLE SHOW UP TO SEE IF ANY ARTIFACTS  COULD BE FOUND IN THE PROPOSED ROW

How's this for a possibility: Is your neighbor having his property surveyed by any chance?

That would be a thought but the ribbons are 90% on my property and are not running the property lines, rather cutting through the middle. I only heard the Gulfport theory as a rumor from a third party. Don't know that it holds any truth. Sorry to bother anyone just thought maybe someone on this site would have some advice for me.

Jessica-you might want to check your lease.  A friend of mine said his lease with Chesapeake allows seismic testing.  First thing they did on our property was set one wooden stake with numbers and the testing co numbers.  Every place they put mixed color ribbons at least one had the initials of the testing co on it.  The ones that mark the paths had no markings and were only one color.

That's what happened here and they were pink. I do know a different co., could be using different colors.
I had more fun with the ribbons in the trails, since in time I found out that was the path the workers were to walk to get the big bags the helicopters dropped.

Kathleen-we did the same thing.  They cut through brush we couldn't walk through.   We called them after they put out the initial flags since they went past the house.  That was when we found out pink was sensors and orange was shot holes.

Lynn, thanks for your response. I did check my lease and, as you had stated, it does give Chesapeake permission to conduct seismic testing on our property.
