Most seismic testing is done by gas companies themselves. Obviously they hire a subcontractor to do the work but its not usually a situation where a company does the testing and then sells the info off to the highest bidder or to multiple companies. For instance, EQT has a sub doing seismic for them from Kittanning to Indiana on US 422 after they fracked that boomer in Elderton.

CGGVeritas is independant from the Gas Companies, although they can and do work closely to do 3-d testing in the areas the Gas Companies want the data. They may also contract directly with a Gas Company to do exclusive testing in an area. Regarding the recent testing in Clearfield, it was the first phase of a three year project, they will be moving east from there over the next couple of years, following the Marcellus Fairway, testing approximately 400 square miles each year, and selling the data to whomever wants to buy. Sweet spots can refer to a number of conditions, easy access, nearby pipelines, nearby water source, thickness of the shale, absence of fault lines in the under and overlying rock, depth of the shale (deeper is under more pressure), thermal maturity (under cooked has liquid hydrocarbons in it, over cooked is bad too, though I'm not sure why), and probably most importantly the organic content of the shale (more is better).
