So as many of you know we look out at a Beech Resources gas well pad on the neighboring ridge. They started pad construction in 2019, and have been slowly finishing drilling over the last year and a half. I think they're done now, and just recently every so often (sometimes several times a day), there are one to two spots on the pad that make a ton of noise and spew steam/gas into the air. This lasts about 1-3 minutes. I'm attaching a video I took this morning. Normally the noise/steam comes from the left side of the pad behind what looks like a gray storage container, but maybe it's something else (I'm looking through binoculars). Today, it was coming out of that area as well as an object that looks like a bright silver propane tank (I know it's not a propane tank, I just don't know it's purpose :) ).
Any ideas what this is?

Hi Matt,
Im sorry no one that knows the answer has replied. I’ve been curios what is is since your discussion posted. I used to travel the back roads through the drilling patch for work and would see uncommon equipment or materials being delivered to well sites. Did you notice any unusual traffic to the site. A few times I saw multiple tankers of CO2 being delivered to sites but could never find out what it was used for. Have you found out what was happening yet?
I WOULD THINK THEY ARE BLOWING MENTHANE OUT OF THE WELL, TO KEEP THE PRESSURE DOWN ON THE GUAGE. I SAW THIS 1 TIME IN SUSQ/COUNTY PA, MAYBE 2010?? PAD WAS 100 YDS OR SO FROM THE ROAD. I WAS DRIVING UP THE ROAD BEFORE I GOT TO THE PAD, & I HEARD WHAT SOUNDED LIKE AIR COMING OUT OF AN AIR LINE WITH A HOLE IN IT. GOT CLOSER TO THE PAD & HAD TO SHUT MY WINDOW IN MY TRUCK IT WAS GETTING LOUDER. GOT UP THE ROAD & COULD SEE THE PAD & HERE IS A GUY WITH COMPANY TRUCK WITH THE VALVE OPEN AT THE WELLHEAD VENTING THE WELL. IT WAS LIKE A MILLION TIMES LOUDER THEN AN AIR HOSE WITH A HOLE IN IT. I STOPPED & WATCHED FOR ABOUT 30-40 SECONDS & WENT ON MY WAY, I COULD NOT TAKE THE NOISE ANYMORE, NOT SURE HOW THE GUY ON THE PAD COULD HEAR AFTER THAT. THE WELL WAS NOT HOOKED INTO A PIPELINE YET, & I CAN'T REMEMBER IF IT WAS FRACKED.
I talked to a rep from the company (finally). They said it was routine maintenance being performed, but being performed more regularly as they are waiting for parts from a supplier. About a week later they had a crane, and a tower setup over the part of the pad that emits the vapor. It was up for about 2 days, now it's gone, and the noise is back. Happens about 2-3 times a day now. It's super pleasant to be outside when it's going on. Not sure what kind of an operation they run, but it's nothing like the big players in our area. Anadarko drilled 5 wells on our cabin property in 3 months and were gone. The only activity is the occasional rep coming to check and do maintenance/adjustments. This company has been on this pad off and on for over 2 years and doing stuff I've never seen in our area. I just want them to be done and get out.

AboutWhat makes this site so great? Well, I think it's the fact that, quite frankly, we all have a lot at stake in this thing they call shale. But beyond that, this site is made up of individuals who have worked hard for that little yard we call home. Or, that farm on which blood, sweat and tears have fallen. [ Read More ] |
