I would definitely join the appropriate group of neighbors. The larger (and smarter) the group, the better the deal, both in money and in the contract. Usually you can drop out right up to signing a lease with very little, if any, cost.
Chenango County has NG. Nornew ( a Norwegian company-Norse Energy) has been drilling there for a few years with very good success. The best areas for NG however are not in the north but in central and south Chenango County. I was just informed by our Coalition Steering Committee, that the best Townships in Chenango for gas are Bainbridge, Afton, Coventry and Guilford. Other Townships have gas but these four have it the most. You should join our Central New York Landowners Coalition. We have over 160,000 acres with a good team of lawyers who have recently put our lease out to gas companies. Please see our website and join up. It's not too late! There is power in numbers. http://www.cnylandcoalition.org/
