"any of the leases that I have seen are automatically renewed if activity takes place.  Once the drilling activities start they are life time leases, or at lease (40 years)  This is why you need an attorney for the life of your lease."

Protect your interests and educate yourself before you sign any lease. The land man nor the oil companies do not have your best interest in mind. I have studied oil and gas leases from different assignments and found many facts of interest that would make the leases questionable.
