Understanding the royalty thing...

I have to say I don't understand the oil and gas royalty setup. It seems backwards from other common things ordinary people deal with. If I want my underground water I hire a driller to get it but I don't expect him to finish and then leave me 15% and haul away the rest to sell.  I bring in someone to get corn out of the field, I expect to get it for myself, paying for the use of equipment and time etc. The oil-gas business seems the reverse of such deals we are familiar with.
