lease signing

Is it normal for the leasing company not to sign the lease?/ I thought both parties had to sing the legal contract.

The oil & gas company doesn't sign until it has done all the searches to establish ownership and availability of the O&G rights.  The O&G rights owner (usually the landowner) signs first as a commitment to lease the rights.
