Determining the members of the drilling unit

I live close to a well that is going in near my house. Water samplers came around sampling well for everyone within a 2000 ft. radius of the well.  The horizontal line being drilled from this well will go the opposite direction from me however. My question is, because I'm within the area .of water sampling does that mean I'll be included in the drilling unit. If not how close do you need to be to the drilling site to be included even if your not in the direction of the horizontal line to be fracked? Also when the horizontal lines go out from the drill site what is the distance a person needs to be from the line being fracked to be included in the drilling unit?

Your proximity to the well has nothing to do with whether or not you will be included in the unit. The law states they must sample within a certain amount of feet.

In the Eastern ohio area wells run SE or NW. Are you one of those from the well? If CHK is your driller just call customer service with the pad name from the water papers and your parcel numbers. You can do this if you are leased or not leased, just tell them you would like to know if you are in this unit. They have the answer. If your not all in the rep can't tell you exactly how much you have in only what they see on the drawing, but you will get a good idea by saying maybe half, 3/4, etc.If CHK is not your driller I would still try this with any co. drilling. These reps get yelled at all day by people who call about royalty checks, leases, etc.. so they are more than happy to help a nice person with an easy question I have found. Be prepared to be on hold though. You can even find out the drill date.

I have wondered about this for some time now. How can you see these units? does the gas co have to notify you if your in a unit that they are drilling in? If you don't know the boundries of the unit how do you know if you should be getting royalties?

You never mentioned what state you are in and what co you have as your driller. In ohio the engineers office should have information. Once a unit is declared and the fracking starts all mineral owners are listed and recorded to the state and I'm pretty sure to the county.
Some leases state your driller has to notify you once a unit is declared if you are in it. Others do not have this wording and one day you find a check in your mail box. If you are in ohio the ODNR will post at least the people in a leg of a unit once its drawn up and sent to them by the driller.
PA has different laws which I'm not confident enough to post about.

In Pa the law requires water testing within 2500' of the well bore. Some companies test out to 4000' tp protect hemselves from lawsuits later on.

Thanks for the info. I'm not concerned about the water testing, I know their going to do that. I would just like to know more about these drill units. My ground is in Mercer and Butler co. in Pa and the o&g co. are Halcon and Shell.
