Mike, 

You need to find the exact lease that applies to your property. About half of the storage field has strata leases- therefore the are able to lease the deep rights.  The other half of the landowners have the older Manufacturers Heat and Light leases which have not been updated  for years and are the issues of he lawsuit.  

Yes many storage field landowners signed with Trinity, some with strata leases, some with the older leases.  They paid many of both groups.   In essence the non-strata folks should not have been paid but they were.  Even though CHK acquired those leases, they can't really do anything with the old non-strata leases.

I personally would NOT cash any check from Columbia - you are affirming your lease with them.   Until you see that actual lease you are gambling.    This is a complicated issue- if you need more info you can send me a message and I would be happy to discuss in more detail.
