Today Carrizo Oil & Gas announced that it is entering the Utica Shale Play by way of a Joint Venture with Avista Capital Partners. There are 15,000 acres involved and Carrizo is paying $1,500 per  acre for ONLY 10% interest. You do the math. What would the value per acre be for 100% interest?

For those of you who follow Gulfport/Windsor Ohio/Wexford Capital/Rhino Resources, etc. here's the Rhino Resources 1st qtr financial/operating report. They own 5% of Gulfport's leases, and expect increased cash flow from oil and gas operations. Dig through the report and you will see a good summary of Gulfport's wells. See the link....

Here's an article on Chesapeake selling another large stake in the Utica and Marcellus Plays in SW Pa.

If you read through it , you'll see what the companies are doing as leases near expiration, and how they value leases in todays economic environment. See the link...

Thanks Randy,
Wondering how much of an over-riding interest
they're maintaining and thinking it's probably
an important consideration in these deals.
What's your take ?
Any info. along those lines ?

J-O

Joseph, Many of the leases being sold were signed in the 2008/2010 time frame. Most were 5 yr primary terms with a 5 yr option to re-new (with payment of another bonus). A lot of the leases are scattered, making it difficult to construct large drilling units. Chesapeake will never drill on most of these leases and will not pay to re-new. So, they are trying to sell to companies that can bolt-on the leases to their core leased areas of operations. Chesapeake and their JV partner Stat Oil need to get some cash from these leases rather than just writing them off at a total loss. I doubt if anyone other than Aubrey (1 1/2%) founders override will maintain an interest.

There has been a lot of info on Chesapeake's sale of assets, and much discussion on what prices they have been bringing. Here is a rather lengthy, but well written, article on "what is the acreage worth economic analysis." You will learn a lot about the value of unproven acreage. See the link....
