Lance, try installing the latest version of Google Earth and then reboot your computer.

Heard that landowners between Coventry Estates and I-77 are getting offers to buy their mineral rights. There IS a possible drill pad site on that hill ,access off Slaughter Hill rd. Any other news? Texas company. Don't know who.  Time will tell at recorders office.

Keith,

did not know Anadarko had any lease acrage in Knox township?

Bill

William,

Anadarko acquired a 2/3rds working interest in all of Artex Petroleum's Guernsey County holdings (deep rights, i.e. below the queenston formation, only).  Most of Artex's holdings are in western Guernsey County, with several in Knox Township.  Anadarko also acquired additional acreage through assignment from Alliance Petroleum.

Arminius,

You seem well informed regarding Anadarko's activities in this area. I have been in a lease with Anadarko for over 2 years in Knox Township (Indian Camp) but have received no information over this period of time regarding their drilling plans. Do you have more insight into when these activities with Artex and Alliance took place? It seems to me that they may be waiting for natural gas prices to rise, which they have been doing, before moving forward with drilling. Perhaps they view this area as more related to natural gas production rather than oil or wet gases. Any other info would be most appreciated.

Glenn,

I know no more than the faint echoes I hear and the scattered visions I see online.  Anadarko's lease assignments with Artex and Alliance data back to 2011 and 2012.  You can view these online at www.uslandrecords.com :Click on the state of Ohio on the map; scroll down to Guernsey County; and enter Anadarko on the name line.

Western Guernsey County is saturated with oil:  that is its promise and peril.  Oil is a much more valuable product but because of its larger molecular size, it does not flow as easily as the wet gases and condensate.  In addition, the Utica/Pt. Pleasant formations lie a little more shallow in the western part of the county than the eastern part.  This results in less overall pressure within the reservoir to help the product flow.  This is why the operators in the east continue to highlight the "overpressure" of the reservoir in the east:  those wells will be much more productive with much of the product, dry gas, wet gas, and condensate recoverable.

The first Utica well drilled in Guernsey County was drilled by Chesapeake in 2011 on Red Hill Development land on Little Indian Rd in Wheeling Twp.  This area held great promise intitially (and still does) as several other wells were permitted for the same area at that time including the Anadarko well of which you mention.  However, once the drilling was completed, Chesapeake sold off all of its acreage in western Guernsey County to Devon Energy.  Enervest was brought in to complete the well, and as was feared by many when Chesapeake sold of the well and its western acreage, the well did not produce as was hoped.  The poor results of that well, RHDK 8h, plus the problems Anadarko was having in the southwestern corner of the county, particularly in the well it drilled in the Muskingum County portion of The Wilds, seemed to write-off the western portion of the county.  Devon's decision to sell all of its Utica acreage, including its acreage in Guernsey County, after poor drilling results further west of Guernsey County (Knox, Ashland, and Medina counties) intensified the pessimism.

Hope is not lost.  EQT has begun to have marginal success with its holdings in the southwest portion of Guernsey County.  Although not yet profitable, the fact that they continue to drill the area tells that they must believe commercially profitable wells are only a matter of time and understanding.  In addition, Enervest and an unnamed private company (Red Hill Development?) have entered into a joint venture to drill several wells in Tuscarawas and Stark counties in that portion of the Utica they call the "volatile oil window".  This is the same area as western Guernsey County:  The oil is super light, just below condensate on the API scale, and there is sufficient gas pressure for movement of the fluid.

The most hopeful sign for western Guernsey County is the arrival of Aubrey McClendon.  His decision to locate his regional headquarters in Cambridge cannot be lost:  It is the greatest thing to happen to Guernsey County "since the invention of the plow."  He is a rock star in the oil and gas world and his presence speaks to the promise that is Guernsey County.  When he was with Chesapeake he once said a great prize awaited the company that could crack the oil code in the Utica.  At a later time he added that Chesapeake would not be that company:  He never said that he would not be that company.  Aubrey wants the prize he spoke of and he will find it in Guernsey County.

Arminius~

Thank you, this is most helpful. As you are able to glean more information on this, please post it. It seems to me that with a few smaller players drilling in this general area, Anadarko may lie low for a while, let them do some of the initial heavy lifting and then guage their own plans at a later date accordingly.

Arminius,

I did not know tha.t I know looking a Devon holdings they have a lot of property tied up in northwestern Guernsey county, which includes Knox township. Devon rep. told the Brills they may have a buyer for the well they started, but who knows.

Bill

William,

How long ago did Devon tell the Brill's that they may have a buyer?

Arminius,

If I recall around the first week of November.

I bet EQT would do much better today on the RHDK property. Remember that was nearly 3 years ago. Look at North Dakota now nearly 25 years later. Who's going to give it a shot on D. Brills?

James,

I agree with you in relation to EQT and the RHDK property; however, I fear EQT is too conservative to unlock the areas true potential.  I heard their CEO say in a conference call that he loves long laterals.  Long laterals are great on a more gassy well, but EOG has shown in the Bakken and the Eagle Ford that shorter laterals in an oil area are the better route.

You seem very knowledgeable about the oil and gas industry.  What is your relationship to the industry such that you were granted access to an EQT well site?
