Apparently there is a new "reality show" that starts on CMT this weekend called "Bayou Billionaires." It follows a family in Louisiana who owns 80 acres of land and they hit the "big one" when the natural gas company put "wells" on their land. It's natural gas, of course and the Father was clearly describing fracking. He identified that the new technology allows them to drill down and then out a mile etc etc.

They were interviewed on The Anderson Cooper show yesterday and they said that on their 80 acres of land there are "4 wells" on it currently with plans to put "16 more" in the next 4 years. The hilarious and ridiculous way these people live their lives aside... does anyone have any idea how they can possibly have "4 wells" on 80 acres of land with 16 more to come?

Just wondering about the particulars.

They only need 5 or 10 acres (not exactly sure which it is) to put the well pad......they must be part of a unit.  They said on Anderson that it is not just their family.....it involves others in their area.  You usually get an extra payment from the gas company to actually have the well pad on your property.

Via Anderson:

The Dowdens purchased their 80 acres of land in 1997 for $160,000. Today, they receive between $10,000 and $12,000 a month, per well. They currently have four wells on their land, but soon they will put in 20 — with each well lasting 16-20 years. The family could accumulate an estimated amount of $57.6 million.

According to The Shreveport Times, The Dowdens actually missed out on the gigantic upfront bonus payments because their 80 acres of land in Frierson, LA. were already held to production by unrelated wells. The Dowdens do get their “mailbox money” like some other fortunate landowners do around DeSoto Parish through royalty payments from producing Haynesville wells in neighboring sections. They’re in what is called a unit which is 640 acres or about one square mile.

In addition, Gerald cashed in even further by selling water from a big pond on his property to the gas and oil companies.

Sometimes when they say well, they actually mean a lateral run off the pad.  So a single pad can have multiple laterals. I've heard folks call each lateral a well so maybe that's what they mean.

I was traveling in irwin twp venango cty and saw a new driveway and a bunch of bright lights on georges property

they said he was a natural for cribs for shallionares or bee keeper to the stars

c'mon on brownie you holdin out on us??????????/

I am going to take a ride over there this afternoon and check that out.

Bee should be hibernating this time of year!

I'm dreaming...

Hey, did you get a buck?

I just can't wait to get my new teeth too.

Don't know what depth or acreage requirements are down there but could it be Vertical wells. with lower acreage per well requirements?

i could be wrong but i thought marcellus shale said he heard of 16 wells on a pad. i could be wrong.

10-4 on the  new teeth...mine are only partials, or what is left of them!

I would like to know how many acres are actually in the gas unit the Dowdens are in, did they put in all 80?  The most latterals Ive heard of are 8 to 10 on one pad so dont see where the 20 are coming from.  Someone who knows more about this might explain to me?  I know here we are getting around $100. per acre per month so if all 80 acres are in then thats $8000. from one well. thats if all 80 are in the unit, they  dont always include all your land.

I'm more old school, Jed Clampett is where I want to be !
