A couple of years ago a company driver could sign on with almost ant major carrier in the US for 40 cents a mile or better, paid holidays, paid vacation and a decent health insurance policy. It went all to H when the depression hit (I call it like I see it) drivers lost their paid vacation, paid holidays, medical insurance and were cut in mileage pay below 36 cents a mile or better. It is not uncommon to see the carriers themselves now bragging about 37% profits! The drivers are not seeing any of the profit.
As a driver I have seen drivers that can not speak enough English to tell a service desk what kind of a truck they drive while holding a broken fan belt in their hand. I (still think it wad a dream at times) saw a driver get cockeyed in a fuel island and could not figure out how to straighten the truck out to clear the island and couldn't understand English to understand the help he was getting!
I have personally fed rookie drivers that have been out away from their homes for over three months and sitting at a truck stop awaiting a load and not being paid for sitting there!
Off topic of O&G but it seems such a shame that companies can not treat their employees as a part of the company but instead treat them as a disposable throw away item.
AS to the O&G industry I myself believe 12 hour shifts in adverse weather conditions can promote accidents through fatigue of a crew member. As has been seen in the past employees are pushed in some cases to use stimulants to measure up to what a company wants. When that happens there should be some soul searching.
don't believe for a moment there are carriers with 37% profits...
also, the fact our U.S. govt now ALLOWS trucks from Mexico to drive right into this country, w/o inspecting cargo, no safety inspections allowed along the road - that is probably why wages have gone down. All the business is from Mexico!
Be sure to send Obama a thank you note!
Couldn't find anything recent about this portion of the NAFTA agreement, which was held up over political wrangling for almost 15 years.
I did read, however, they would be held to our safety standards - when I first read about it - couple years ago, they were not going to allow the Mexican trucks to be roadside inspected - guess that part changed.
HERE is one link I found but it is strange, no follow-up articles or info - that's NOT a good sign.

I most of the comments they were looking to invest in more tractors not employees but admit driver shortage may demand higher wages. But transportation is not down a good indicator is when you see road side rest areas fill before 10:00PM http://www.ups.com/content/cn/en/about/news/02012011_asia.html

Thanks,

Permalink Reply by craig on February 9, 2012 at 7:57am Friends, as well as myself, received our bonus checks from CHK at 110 calendar days or so. All within the time frame specified in the lease. This was last summer/fall. I first received a letter saying that we were accepted(or whatever) and that if any money was due it would follow shortly. I am still waiting for one more check and i'm not sure when the time is up...hmmm thanks for bringing this up, I'll have to check this out!
