Public Herald has scanned, mapped, and shared a number of citizens' complaints made to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) concerning gas operations.

Map of Pennsylvania counties colored according to the number of DEP complaint investigations in each. Purple means 400 or more complaints; shades of red mean fewer than 400. Gray means data not yet available.

Washington County has a lot. If we go to http://publicfiles.org/ and click on COMPLAINTS and then SWRO (Southwest Regional Office) and then WASHINGTON COUNTY we get this map, color-coded by municipality. For example, Mount Pleasant Township, near Hickory, has many complaints. The statewide database currently includes scans of documents from about 2300 complaint cases (leaking gas, property damage, pollution, etc), e.g. http://publicfiles.org/complaints/washington-county/

This database will help hold the DEP accountable; a very good thing.

First of Charles Randolph  that argument is just silly and stupid.

WE all know that fossil fuels have an upside to our lives. But you fail to even acknowledge that there could even be a potential down side.  With out plastic our hospitals would come to a stand still.  But in creating all these things we use everyday we are also creating a huge mess that will need to be taken care of. You can’t deny that a pile of plastic rubbish the size of Texas is in our ocean and things like that are example of how we should  do better. Not only that but the power is NOT in the people’s hands.

100,000 people could live off the grid, abstain from using anything that causes damage and guess what Nothing will change.

Change needs to come from who we put in office. The policy makers.

I have just seen a picture of New York city in the 70s. It was brown. The air was a weird shade of brown. Now with a picture like that and who in their right mind would want to visit that?  So the wisdom of forward thinking people in power said let’s clean this up. Now the modern day NY is a great place to live work and visit.  People could not have done this on their won. It also makes business sense .. If you have a trashy city filled with oil rigs , pollution and just nasty conditions it would make me want to visit and spend my dollars there. I was raised in a steel town in the 70’s. Yes it helped create the great middle class but at the same time the river that I used to swim in as a kid caught fire a lot.

I have always been a firm believer that industry and people can live in harmony in a safe clean way. That my friend is the future. Burning things for fuel in 1700 technology. We can and should be doing better.
