I have noticed a helicopter in the Cadiz-East Cadiz Ohio area in the past couple of days. It has a cable suspended beneath it with something attached to the end of the cable. It keeps dipping close to the ground then goes back up and keeps repeating this action. Does anyone know why it is doing this?

Maybe this??

The same principle is used in searching for oil on land. A sonar pulse is sent into the ground. Echoes come back from the different layers of soil and rock and tell geologists what kinds of soils and rocks are present. This helps them identify areas for drilling that are most likely to contain oil or gas. This subterranean mapping is called seismic exploration.

Pretty basic explanation, may be entirely wrong. Possibly one of the site "resident authorities" can elaborate, or point you in a totally different direction.

What drew me to this idea was the "dipping". Same thing a helicopter does when they are trying to locate a submarine under water from an aerial platform using sonar

More likely it is dropping off materials used for siesmic work. It is much faster and less intrusive to drop them by air instead of trucking them across farm fields and through woods.  They dropped them here in Lawrence Co, Pa in April. They had three or four large orange bags on a fifty foot cable and dropped them off one at a time.  Then they picked them up two weeks ago after all the siesmic was done.

Exactly, just after I started this discussion, I heard a helicopter and looked out the window to see it lowering a large orange bag into my pasture-mystery solved Thanks

Global dropping sensors for seismic studies....Rumor has it that they will shoot off the area east of Cadiz in the next 5-7 days....

Do you know which township(s)?

I am in Green Township, half way between Cadiz and Hopedale.
