I"ve been reading about drillers contemplating drilling multiple wells into multiple formations under one wellpad.say 4 into the Utica, 4 into the Marcellus, 4 into maybe a couple others. AFTER everyone is leased of course. Sure would like to be in one of those units! My question is ; can they go into those other formations from the same top hole?Or will there have to be a separate well spud for each formation? With one of the new walking/talking super rigs, they could drill 18/24 holes per pad.

I don'tknow, but it's a good question. I will be waiting to hear some answers from some of the more knolegable people on this site.

 Bo,

------"My question is ; can they go into those other formations from the same top hole?"

As I understand it, they need a new well for each one.

I know there are multiple formations that hold gas in my area (Southern Columbiana County Ohio).

I have included 3 well logs that show how wells drilled in this area have shown gas and oil from multiple formations. The Marcellus has thinned by the time it gets this far west but there are other shales in the "Ohio shale" that may be productive.

By the way, the one well listed below was "Fracked" in 1982. This was a vertical well, so they were only able to frack the small area around the well bore. Even so they were able to get gas to flow. Just not enough to make the well profitable.

I am not one of the knowledgeable people on this subject, however in Monroe Co. Ohio Lee Township there is a pad nearing completion and I think with a spud date near June 1st with eight permits in the Marcellus and eight permits in the Utica.   Gary Evans, CEO, of Magnum Hunter Resources, says they will be on the pad a year and a half; think this may be a joint venture with Eclipse. Yes it is with a new Schramm rig that walks instead of being torn down to move.  Should be an interesting well to follow, it is the Stalder well.
