As I sat this morning...barely awake and sleepy eyed, I inhale my second mug of coffee.  WKYC news (channel 3 in my area) is on...not really listening at this point, then I see the headline on the screen.....MONEY OR MORALS?  This news segment was about the Utica shale drilling in Ohio and the decision that landowners face regarding to lease or not lease.  They interviewed a gentleman who owned 10 acres and has yet decided to lease or not, due to the possible environmental concerns.  It was your typical news segment on the pros and cons for a landowner, but what REALLY ticked me off was that headline! My family calls me a tree hugger...I feed every stray animal that wanders into my woods, I help the injured, I do nature photography, I donate to charities when I can.  I've paid for food for strangers and I've taken the chance to intervene on certain outright immoral situations when I saw them unfold...BUT, since I HAVE leased with an oil/gas company...I have no morals?!  Of course it couldn't possibly be that I have done enormous amounts of research on the pros/cons of this type of drilling, spent quite a bit of time sorting this all out in my mind and have made an informed decision?!  I have great hope and faith in the overall safety of this type of drilling.  Nothing like adding 'fuel' to the fire!  I'm done venting.

Allow me to add...Nowhere in the segment was it stated that we leased landowners are...immoral.  It was those three little words that got me.  Correction...Caption not Headline.

A small and vocal Minority who thinks they can speak for the Majority.

Freedom!!!!

I think its time to cancel subscriptions to news papers that promote the anties agenda and let them know thats why you are canceling,I'm gonna do that today to the phila. inquier.

I suppose I could switch the channel and watch another newscast.  I tire of all the innuendos and insinuations attached to the reporting that I've read or seen which imply anything negative to my/our character...in regards to our leasing.   It just ticked me off!

It's not really reporting these days.  Most newspapers and television news stations just parrot what they've heard or read somewhere else that fits their agenda.  The only real journalistic reporting they do is when they stand around a crime scene or terrible accident pointing the camera at the smear on the pavement.

They're just localized entertainment shows these days.  When the nightly news spends time telling us about the goings on in the personal lives of show biz personalities they're just looking for ratings.  They're not really wanting to inform the community with pertinent information.  And, don't get me started on those awful over flamboyant weather terrorists...!

Utica shale can you add me as a friend . I have something I would like to share with you off line .

importing energy is immoral in my opinion. How dare them attack a landowner. keep feeding those animals, and try to ignore them

Thanks for your reply, Larry.  It's becoming harder and harder to ignore them....

I wonder how many landowners they polled? How many apartment dwellers they polled?

Exactly.

I know this would never happen but this is my feelings.  Put it up for a vote.  Only landowners could vote on it and you get one vote for every acre of land you own.  Farmers own most of the land around but they have very little say in how they use their land!  Peopel move out to the country and then complain when the farmer takes his manure out to the fields.   So they make all kinds of regulations on the farmer but never mind all the water run off from developments that the farmer has to put up with.  They just go out and put new tile in the fields and take care of the problem.  I am all for one vote for every acre of land you own!

Well put. Thank you.
