Interesting read.

Is it an absolute that oil can only be found in the Ohio portion of the Utica? Is there any oil in the other areas, like PA or WV? And is that oil confined to the Utica or could there also be oil in the Marcellus or Upper Devonian or other plays? I only see gas being mentioned for most shale plays, so my assumption is that the only oil is in OH, but maybe I'm mistaken.

You had better look up the Eaagle Ford shale in Texas and others.

OK. From what I've read, the Eagle Ford Shale produces both oil and gas. Is the Utica/Marcellus a similar situation, then?

It sounds like they think it's worthwhile, but they don't know how to frac it right.

Your comments are interesting because I am in Erie County, Pa. and have been following the information. A Utica test well (Adameck#1) is located in Erie County, Pa.

not too far from the New York border.  Our land is just 3-4 miles south of that well.

The well has not been flow tested or fracked and the drilling was last spring(2013).

Weatherford did the testing and the results are not public. What I can gather from talking to both the owner and the driller, who as I understand the situation are in dispute of sorts.  The driller and the owner are both "oil" people and are looking for oil below the Utica (Roserun/Bekermantown/TBR/Point Pleasant.  They say they go good gas shows in some of the shallowers stratas, Medina, Upper Devonian.

They good good thickness in the Utica but experienced a lot of clay and speculate the fracking is challenging.

The other side of the spectrum other companies are eyeing the Upper Devonian

which is a lot shallower, not as tight, fracking is much easier and I believe some of them are looking at horizontal drilling in the Upper Devonian.  The talk is that the Rinestreet Shale could be very prolific.  Empire Energy,US from New York has a lot

of acreage HBP and my guess is they will be exploring that in the future.  EmKey Energy who is more of a midstream company is building pipelines in the area and one of their affiliates just completed a natural gas processing plant in Union City that cost over $10million.  They also purchased gas distribution lines from Norse in New York

and together with the lines already in owned by National Fuel the area has a fair amount of distribution already. The Port of Erie is expanding to allow the shipping over the water to the east coast markets and overseas, this is especially important since the US government is looking to export natural gas to Europe to mitigage the Russian influence on their energy.  The area is positioning itself for growth and Ohio has plans to tie into this activity giving Ohio, Pennsylvania better access to large east coast markets both over water and through the gas line distribution system.

The Utica is not going to dry up but everybody has not cracked the "code" but technology is changing by the minute.  The time woill come......
