Trenton Black River Formation& Utica In Western NY (How Viable Is It) & What Do You Know About It

I am just trying to find out if there are any factual reports on the Trenton Black River Formation & Utica Shale In Western NY. I would like to know how viable it is?  Does anyone know much about it? Will it be produced? Is It Overmature? Immature? Viable OR Not Viable?

Quincy,

From everything I have researched (for a couple of years- reading many studies, etc):

The Utica in NY is thick, but the carbon content is not great. Supposedly the phase is dry gas, but I hold out hope that there will be areas of wet gas. This hope rests on the similarity in depth to Ohio, but I have not seen a map that suggests a wet gas phase.

The Rhinestreet formation holds promise, in Chatauqua & Cattaraugus Counties. The Marcellus is a bit thin in Western NY, however high carbon content & possibly in the oil phase. The farther south and east will hold thicker Marcellus. As you head east, it will be in the dry gas phase. Quite the balancing act.

All in all, I think it will be hit or miss. Hopefully more hits than misses.

I hope this helps.

Dave
