Some semi-random thoughts:

 

You may have already accomplished this, if not:

Attempt to obtain reference letters from your military supervisors and instructors.

Attempt to obtain reference letters from your College instructors.

 

Are you willing to relocate?  If so, indicate this – up front.

 

You indicated an interest in rig work. The O&G industry has a history of being cyclical. Take into consideration that the drilling end of the business is one of the less stable – when things slow, rigs quickly get stacked. Last in, first out can be a killer.

Look for jobs that stress brains over brawn; jobs that mainly require brawn can result in a bad back and a short career. Look at where you might want to be in ten years.

 

Your experience would make you attractive for not only rig work, but also for Well Service Companies (Fracing Crews, and equipment maintenance).

 

Also, look at the Mid-Stream companies – Pipeline, Compressor Stations, etc.

These would potentially provide greater job security and less need to re-locate.

Also, look at those companies/industries that build and maintain the equipment.

 

Try to locate and network with individuals that have graduated from your College and from your Military service; especially those that are making a career in the O & G sector. Often when a job is open (or about to open) an employer will first ask their better employees if they know of someone who they might suggest.

Stress the Safety training aspects of your education and experience.

Before sending out a resume, locate the prospective employers corporate website and “learn” about the company. Use information/knowledge obtained about the company to “customize” your cover letter and incorporate what you have taken to trouble learn in an interview.

Not in the Oil and Gas Industry but you might try Gas Turbine Power Generation, Usually prior naval veterans land these positions as shipboard turbines are more to the type utilized in a two stage system power generation system.   Advantages home daily, good pay I have never seen a dirty gas turbine plant.

Thanks for the support guys, it always feels great to see the public stand behind the troops.

I am from Steubenville Ohio, I am currently taking the ShaleNet training course at the community college here.  I have applied to about 30 jobs so far, and I am faxing out resume's like crazy! So hopefully I get a call back soon.
