Hello,

I hope I am on the correct site and someone can shed some light for me on what to expect in reference to drilling and fracking close to my property.

We are looking at a 3 acre home in Harmony and a well site has been cleared about 1/2 mile behind us. The well is scheduled to be drilled in September and fracked shortly thereafter. I've heard some horror stories about the effects of fracking on the internet but I have not read any positive stories except for Truthland, which I wasn't impressed with the movie. It was as guilty as Gasland in it's one sided production. Why the movie didn't include interviews from the families living close to the farm owned by the woman who starred in the film is beyond me. These families had claims against the Energy Company in that area because their wells had gone bad. Incidentally, those families recently received a settlement from the company fracking in that area; it was settled out of court. I want to say it was Chesapeake Energy.

But my question is, anyone out there has some positive stories or can direct me to a place that I can read some positive stories?

Thank you.

I would say you ARE in the right place and hopefully others will provide feedback to you as well. Check out the PADEP webiste and also FracFocus.org (once the wells are fracked) to keep up on what is going on in your area and to educate yourself on the processes used. There are a lot of negative stories out there and they are easier to find then the positive stories because of the stigma they create. The best thing to do is EDUCATE YOURSELF and form your own opinions. ASK questions of anyone in the industry you can get your hands on whether it be landmen, drillers, construction people, truck drivers, etc. The media makes the industry out to be so secretive when in fact industry (at least reputable companies) are quite transparent to the public. Also, watch the local paper for Open Houses and informational gatherings provided by industry. Check out the local fairs and what not also, because industry usually has representatives onsite to answer any questions.

Wikimarcellus.com is a good source, especially for following what the individual companies are up to. For an industry that is supposedly so secretive, there is still a lot of info in the public domain. It will help you separate fact from fiction, and filter the propaganda.

Thank You!!

Cathy,

The companies doing the drilling will usually perform an extensive test on your groundwater.  This process is performed by a second party sampling company and the samples are sent to a third party nationally accredited laboratory.  This is done to protect both you the home owner from contamination and the gas company from fraudulent claims of "ruined water".

They will usually collect samples up until the spudding begins.
