Hurricane Sandy was a powerful demonstration of the importance of natural gas resources to urban America and, more specifically, the potential of natural gas cogeneration to keep the lights on during natural disasters.
Hurricane Sandy was one of the costliest natural disasters to ever strike the United States. For many Americans, it was an almost surreal experience to see the usually bustling streets of New York City made dark and silent by floods and high winds. While the normally bright lights of New York went out for much of the population, in the sea of all this darkness there were a few small islands of hope.
Some buildings and institutions in New York were equipped with natural gas cogeneration, which allowed them to keep their lights on as the rest of the city, and indeed much of the Eastern seaboard, was plunged into darkness. Here we will talk about how natural gas cogeneration helped these places weather the worst of Hurricane Sandy.
