To day I saw a tanker truck with the number 1267, which means petroleum.   That is the standard number that will be seen on the diamond shaped placard on tanker trucks and rail tankers for petroleum.

The United Nations developed this international set of numbers for the hauling of various cargo.  In the US one finds these numbers in what is referred to as the "Yellow Book" used by emergency responders which even includes tow truck drivers, not just law enforcement and firefighters.

Anyway look for the placard, read the number, check the list of numbers in Wikipedia.  The first link below is a short article describing  how to read the number, the colors, etc. The article talks about railcars, but one reads the placards the same way for tanker trucks.   Second link is to the actual set of numbers.   This is an amazing international numbering system giving lots of information.

Petroleum is a rather broad, generic term.  Petroleum products include jet fuel, kerosene, mineral spirits, gasoline and diesel fuel (placard number 1203), lubricants, and thousands more.  The number 1267 is specifically crude oil.

Glad to know someone really knows or checks the numbers.   Checking those listings are very revealing about what is going on in the oil patch.   From my observation only brine trucks have no placards,  but a licensing number.  These numbers are very revealing about what is going on in the oil patch where ever it is located.  I hope some of you will post some of the numbers you are seeing on the highways and byways.

EQT says that even some of the 1267 Tankers will be carrying brine.. but that it has enough petroleum in it yet.. that it still has to be 1267 placard

So not EVERY 1267 will be ALL CRUDE.....:(

I use it all the time when I'm stuck at a RR Crossing, you wouldn't believe what is in some of those tank cars!!

 Our fantastic Homeland Security did a high dollar movie presentation for truck drivers called HAZMAT SECURITY.  One of the most stressed points they made was DO NOT TELL ANYONE WHAT YOU ARE HAULING. 

  Now as you know how to tell what a truck is hauling be it Propane, Liquid Hydrogen, Blasting Agent, Uranium hexafluoride or what ever. Just go down to your local truck stop and buy a HAZMAT BOOK.  No need to ask a driver what he or she is hauling. Does anyone see a open hole here for a terrorist, after all a truck driver does stop to use a bathroom.

This will make OBAMA very MAD..

He will not tolerate this..

He will have a "hearing" on it for sure....

Take note of all the enourmous grafitti on the sides of many tank cars and box cars.  Think about this: If the grafitti vandals have apparently unfettered access to the rail cars to do their work, how much evil could be done by a team of terrorists in that same time?

I would hope that cars with explosives inside are not left out where vandals can access them. Hope.  (yah, I know… just keep on hoping…)
