wells are being shut in

3 out of 4 wells on our pad in terry twp Bradford co. pa have been shut in last week (may 7) these are Chesapeake wells the word is that Chesapeake will shut in about 80 wells in bradford county pa.

Could you give a production amount (day or month) from these wells? How long have they been in production? Also do you have a shut in clause? Sounds to me like a takeaway issue. Might just be upstream wells have higher pressure.Those pipelines will be paid for somehow. Might just want to wait for better prices. Now if they start plugging these wells that's different.

the mcf per month has been averaging 53000 to 60000 per month per well the wells went on line in May of 2013 and the months of May thru Sept. 2013 were a bit higher as far as i can tell they are not plugging the wells they have just shut in 3 of the 4 wells on our pad and left one producing.

Sounds likely just a pipeline or market issue. 2MMcf/day is still good. Not something they'll plug and call it a day. Now if it was 20 MCF/day!

This isn't uncommon if the wells are not generating a positive enough rate of return.  CHK and other operators did the same thing in 2011/12.

Marcellus Dry Gas Wells ?

Hearing / reading there's not enough of a market for all the gas that could be produced - so they don't produce as much by shut ins.

Also not enough take away infrastructure to handle all the production that could happen if there were an expanded market (talking about export here).

Credible or not ?

I would suggest multiple factors. Depressed prices, opeational costs based on the recent lay offs at the Athens office, ancillary support operations that layed staff off and the impending lawsuits. When all factors were reviewed my guess is they decided to cut their losses and in the process gain stock price leverage by demonstrating cost cutting as well as leverage in the courtroom. I doubt we can point to one single factor.

What will be interesting is to see which wells/pads are turned off, painful though it may be. I guess a countryside drive to see if the compressors are running is in the future.

Greetings, I have 6 wells in Greene county, Pa. 2 were shut to only being active "1" DAY in March. The other 4 remained active and the other 5 on the same pad were also active. Any reasons for cutting off these wells as they were still producing the month before within the expected production rates? These are EQT wells.

Which well was shut in. I am on the smith well in terry twp. One well has been off line for sometime now

Thanks Mike, It's the Alexander well pad, 3 of 4 wells have been shut in about 3 weeks now.

Hello bobt,

Do you have any other info on the shut-in of the Alexander well pad that you mentioned. We are a part of that unit and this is hard news. Would be interested in anything you know as we know very little about this stuff. Hope to hear from you with regards to this matter. Thank you.

Polly; the last thing i heard just this Thursday May 21 from two maintenance workers at the well pad is that the wells are not shut in, but are being cycled. CHK is reducing the amount of gas produced by limiting the flow week by week to get the amount they want.
