Hello, I'm new to the forum and seeking advice and insight to a recent offer from Artex in Marietta Ohio for our families property in Perry County. Artex is seeking our approval to do 3D seismic with option to lease. The Utica and Point Pleasant is excluded. Artex wants the Knox Formation. My question is are there any formations in the Knox that can be horizontally drilled. From my research Artex only drills vertical wells, but I'm just thinking of the future. Thanks in advance.

Three new permits today BlueJack for Knox county Morgan and Clay townships(all in the 30 sq mi 3D shoot) Driller is Artex on Knox Energy leases. Target is Knox Formation.

Great news!

Artex had a Lost Hole down in Perry. Cincinnati Group? Isnt that the old name for the Utica?

Red Medina and Utica.  Point Pleasant is directly below the Cincinnati.

Right again Dexter.

Quite a few years ago Murphy Oil drilled some decent vertical legacy Utica wells in Fairfield County. I see Murphy reported the TD as Cincinatti Group. I think there is a report by Wickstrom and Baranoski out there somewhere. If I find it I will post.

In this case in Perry a lost hole may not be a bad thing. My thought is Artex was drilling on seismic along a fault in the Cincinatti/Utica and hit a gas pocket ala PDC lost hole in Morgan. I find it interesting that Artex is drilling on Franklin Real estate(FREC/Ohio Power) land leased to Anadarko in Perry and then they are moving north to Knox to drill on Devon Energy leaseholds. I guess Jerry has some serious connections.
Natural fractures like this in the south Utica is what the Northern Utica is lacking. Oh my, awaiting the attack.

What do you mean when you say a "lost hole". Is that good? Sorry for my ignorance  and thanks for any knowledge you can share.

James, I think the natural fracturing down that way may end up making Artex a lot of money.

Dexter, I noticed that in the permit for the Utica well in Western Morgan they will logging the Conasauga Shale that lies just beneath the Beekmantown/Roserun. Any chance all these JV's are for that said formation?

I still think it's a straight Rose Run play with the option to get some data on other formations on the way down there.  But we shall see.

How do I appreciate this conversation about exploration in Ohio. I'm not the everyday poster here on GMS, but so tired of the northern Utica development talk or lack of.

Dexter and James, does Artex have it own rigs or do they subcontract the drilling out to other companies?

They use Kilbarger. I think Kilbarger dedicates a rig to Artex and another to Knox Energy. They stay busy.

Is it common for a driller to drill down to the Point Pleasant then plug back to the Clinton?
