Marcellus is too thin in most Ohio counties. Monroe County, near the state line has been drilled and produces fairly well. The Marcellus in this area can be anywhere from 40-60' thick, barely enough to get results.

I am a day late and a dollar short it seems! Thank you all for the information, so the closer to PA we are the better? I am in Belmont close to the WV line, so this could be good in the future.

Bill,

I found 2 vertical wells drilled to the Marcellus in my area of northern Grandview Township, Washington County that were drilled in 2010,2011 that show 80-84 foot thickness at a depth of around 5,950 feet. I found these while playing around on the ODNR well locator.

Bill and J.D.  here is an article listing vertical Marcellus wells drilled in Monroe, Belmont, and Jefferson counties prior to sometime  in 2011.   I attempted to start this discussion in April of 2013 but didn't get responses.  I asked a petroleum engineer in an open leasing meeting in May of 2013 about the width of  the Marcellus that could be productive.   I was thinking nothing less than 50 feet and was told that it could be smaller than fifty and still be productive.    And Marcellus is in Monroe, Belmont, and Jefferson counties absolutely.  The Ormet well owned by Magnum Hunter began as a vertical that according to the well card is now plugged.   The Eisenbarth and Dangel wells now owned by Statoil as a vertical is now also plugged.  Both of these wells now have Marcellus and Utica horizontal wells and permits.  Read some of the well cards to see the width of the Marcellus in these wells.   And the  third formation is the Rhinestreet which Eclipse has leased in a number of their leases in Monroe County.

Searcherone - 2 of the wells mentioned in the link you provided I believe could be 1.] the D. Earley well in section 17 of Benton twp. along the county line, showing a 81 foot thickness of Marcellus, 2.] the Cisler well in section 23 of benton twp. with a 82 foot thickness, both drilled in the summer of 2008.

 In Grandview Twp. there is another Cisler well in the nw corner of section 21 drilled in 2008 that shows the marcellus as 84 feet thick.  This same area is also included in Gastar's "core of the core" of the Utica dry gas you referenced in another discussion. I haven't found any others further west to use as a possible boundary, but I did notice that the one of the Whitacre wells show Marcellus as less than 20 feet.
