I was contacted by Chesapeake wanting my husband to sign the lease that expires 2015.  I am the only the that owns the land.  He said it would be in case I die.  Which is a lie if he would have taken the time to read the lease.  The lease I signed was by far a terrible lease.  Why all of a sudden do the want my husbands signature on the lease.  He of course refuses because of what a horrible lease it is.  And without going into details, they have not lived up to their own contract to us.  Does anyone know what is going on?  I live in Rumley Township.  I am VERY well aware of what is taking place in Harrison County.  Not to mention Jewett and Scio.  Wells are being drilled in a frenzy type manner.  He also said he wanted my husbands signature to ratify the lease.  WHAT?  If anyone has any information pertaining to this I would greatly appreciate hearing from you.  I think I speak for the group of us when I say I do not like to be treated as an ignorant individual.  I apologize for sounding angry but the continuous deceit and lies are uncalled for.  I have repeatedly told them.....be fair to us and we will be fair to you.  Thank you for your time and consideration and I apologize for sounding so salty!!!!!

Did your husband sign a release of dower ? They want him to sign the lease probably becouse he owns half of what you own, minerals ,house , land, ect.  I would think this lease is probably not good to the o/g company and you should be released from this lease with out his signature.

There's nothing sneaky about it, it's the ancient Ohio dower law.  A spouse has the right to 30% of the other spouse's property, has a life estate in it.  Automatically.  Only two or three states still have this law and its long since outlived its usefulness.  Unless he releases his dower rights and quit claims the property to you, he owns 30% of it, and as a result, they have to have him ratify or sign the lease (or release the rights).  Otherwise, they only have the property partially leased.  As long as you are married, your spouse has a life estate in 30% of all property.  If it makes you feel any better, if you think it's a terrible lease, it's now a bad lease if he doesn't sign.  That puts CHK in a pickle, but they could still force pool you.   

If this lease is no longer valid, can I approach other energy companies?  Or should I contact Chesapeake to have them redo the lease?  Also Cry Baby is a little harsh don't you think?  I realize one person does not speak for an entire group.  Thank you for your reply to all of you.  I greatly appreciate the help.  I hope when one of you have a question, you aren't subjected to name calling.  I surely wouldn't degrade another person.  It wouldn't matter what the situation.  Again THANK YOU to all of you that have taken time out of your busy schedules to answer my question.  Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!!!!  I hope some day I am able to help you.
