We are wondering if the surface water ponds on our property should be dug larger to increase volume if our gas company decides to drill on or nearby. I would appreciate any wisdom on doing so. No fish or livestock would be effected. SW PA

Hi Tom,

Be careful of the wetland issue with the ponds.  Even if you make them larger you are going to need an Army Corps permit.  Farm ponds are usually considered "waters of the US" and as such fall under the Clean Water Act. EPA has just expanded its new wetland enforcement program to include farm issues.  it is no longer just satisfying NRCS.

Check out our website for more info about this program.  http://swampschool.org

Good luck!  If we can help, please let me know.
