L.S. - I'm not sure of the answers to your questions, but the Ion guys who have been on my property are probably the same guys who are on your property.  They have been VERY receptive to answering questions and concerns of landowners.  I encourage you to contact the Ion Crew Support guy who is very personable and seems to want to help landowners with their problems/concerns.  Jed Standish, cell phone 585-590-2466, or email jstandi1@yahoo.com.com ;  He has been quick in responding to my questions, and will probably come to your property to meet with you if you like.  I'm located in eastern Armstrong County, near Rural Valley.  Where are you located?  I'm curious to know when Ion will set the receivers (meters) in our area.  Last I heard them say was "as soon as possible, but maybe as late as October".  Good luck!

Anyone know what happens when the seismic testing is done with holes less than 100' apart.  We didn't want over 30 holes on our property; but our neighbor signed.  He has a small rectangle between our fields and this week end we saw the survey tape in the woods.  Checked, Ion has drilled in the 4 corners of this rectangle.  They also have there meters set.   One of our shallow gas wells is less than 250' from one of the holes and our well water comes from that direction.  Does anyone have any idea if something changes with our gas production or our water if we have any recourse.  Ion obviously decided to try to optimize their results considering the original maps showed only 1 hole on this rectangle.  Guess they must feel they will pick up some of what's on our land with these 4 holes.  Has anyone had anything like this with the distances and what happened after the testing?

Follow-up to my last entry.  Ion and the subcontractors doing the seismic survey and testing have been fantastic.  All phases of their work is completed on my property up to the drilling of holes (next) and I could not be happier.  I have been paid, as promised.  All of my requests have been honored without question.  They notify me before each time someone arrives to do work.  They even allowed me, at my request, to walk with the clearing crew this past Saturday as they asked my permission to cut brush and deadfall between each point where a hole will be drilled.  I don't know what negative information is flowing out there, but I suspect it is "hearsay" and not personal experience.  My experience up to now has been great.

I just wanted to let you know about an upcoming Seminar Series through the YPE called Energy Industry Training Series- It’s 12 part series, although you can just attend one or two if you like. The first Seminar is in June, and gives a complete overview of both the Marcellus and Utica plays.

You can learn more here!

The lease I signed with ION/GX has water and other protection clauses in it, and didn't cost me anything but a little negotiating, no attorneys (I've been down that road before).  The ION boys I talk to are nothing but helpful and they are honoring every detail written into our lease agreement.  Very satisfied so far, and I'm normally a skeptical person.

Well, alot has happened since I first posted.  1) I attended their (Ion/GX) seminar at the Kittanning Twp. fire hall in November and I wasn't impressed at all.  They were shifty to say the least and many landowners left with a bad taste in their mouths. 2) My attorney said not to sign anything without some protection clauses...mostly for water...and that would cost me money.  Why would I spend money to allow someone to survey my land??  And 3) I am surrounded by Buffalo Valley LTD. (more affectionately known as the Snyders) and they turned down ION/GX so the situation is moot for now.  They haven't come back.  I'm just a little island in a big sea of land.

Ed - As I've posted previously, I was also approached by ION/GX and ultimately signed the lease permission to have testing on my property.  My gas is leased by CNX (Consol) so it benefits me to have the testing done to see if there are faults should CNX want to drill here.  So I'm in a bit different situation than you are.  If you allow a gas company to eventually lease your gas, and you have the seismic testing completed, that is one step that will not have to be done later.  My understanding from ION/GX is that they have been contracted to do testing over a very large area of Armstrong County (and surrounding counties).  To me, that means the big gas companies are getting ready for drilling once the energy environment becomes favorable to them, meaning gas prices rise and government controls ease.  So, for you, my opinion is that it does not hurt you to have the testing done.  It's entirely up to you.  Waiting may bring a higher payout per acre from ION/GX later, but I doubt it.  Just my thoughts.  By all appearances, there is going to be a very large gas boom in and around Armstrong County in the future.  There are large transmission pipelines being constructed, and marcellus interest appears to be bright for our area.  Hope this helps.  Maybe others will post info here for you to consider.  Good luck!

I was just approached by ION / GX to have seismic testing done on my property in South Buffalo Twp.  My gas isn't leased.  Is it to my advantage or disadvantage to let them do this prior to leasing?  I haven't been recently approached to lease.  I was approached in 2008 but declined at that time.    Just looking for opinions.

Welcome Deb.  I'm not an expert on marcellus shale exploration, but have shared interest in the Rural Valley-Dayton area.  The gas companies seem to not share much information with landowners, until they show up on your doorstep.  That's when you first know they have some interest in your area.  About 2 years ago, there was interest in our area but that diminished due to gas prices dropping and rising uncertainty within the political landscape.  Here is my own personal opinion, if the Country elects a new president this fall AND if we experience a colder than normal winter, gas exploration will begin to become a news item again.  In the absence of either happening, we will see small and slow progress over the next 4 years in our area.
