Still trying to figure out how to best use this site.

My land is in a basically undeveloped area and I would like to find out what
jobs and small business opportunities will become available as gas exploration
and drilling really gets into high gear in the next several years. How much
housing will be needed; what support services will drilling rigs and pipeline
companies need; what local construction companies can do to support the gas
companies; and where local people can find jobs when they are not drilling
specialists.

Is there any background info from the industry on what to expect as the fields
develop? I like to think that locals who have no land to lease can also reap
some benefits from natural gas activities.

I just started my business last year in Tioga County, when I retired from 15 years working as DCNR's Wildlife Biologist. We do wildlife consulting, and most of my business has come from environmental reviews for Marcellus Shale operations. Since then, I've expanded to two full-time and 8 part-time employees.

We've done bat, woodrat, rattlesnake, Osprey, rare plants, invasive plants, and wetlands surveys, and GIS mapping.

I'm glad to have a thriving business, and be a part of protecting the important wild resources. There are many other job opportunities in this area related to these developments besides the landowner options.

There are lots of opportunities already, and many more in the process.

The best way to find out (in my opinion) is to do a Google search on "marcellus shale jobs" and "marcellus shale education" and so on, plus stay up to date with news articles on marcellus shale in the news section of Google.

For those who want to get an education for one of the better gas jobs, many training programs are already going. If you just want to be a service business for the companies and workers, you could talk to the companies who are already operating in your area to see what they need NOW, and what they will need soon.

The money that is and will be flowing into the area is bigger than anything we have ever seen. Landowners will get just a drop of that. Anyone who has the willingness to learn and a good work ethic could make FAR MORE than any landowner!
Good article in the Scranton Times-Tribune newspaper on businesses opening up in Bradford County, Pa. This article answers some of my questions about what support businesses/jobs occur during the development phase of gas exploration and development. See link below.

Sorry it's apparently not a hot link.
