Not much info in the letter enXco sent out, but it would be on the ridge of hills that runs through Richmond, Tioga, Rutland, and Jackson Twps.

"He did mention a dollar figure of $5.00 but I have no idea what that might have been about."

Two possibilities come to mind:
(1) The first Trenton/Black River leases were $5/$2. But those would have expired several years ago unless the term was more than 5 years or a well was drilled.

(2) $5 is a common shut-in payment. So perhaps your ex-BIL is in a shut-in drilling unit. Incidentally, I just read an estimate of 500+ shut-in MS wells in PA.
I just learned today that a family named Hoffman had purchased that farm of my sister and her hauband. Hoffman later sold it to the Miles family. And their niece Mariah Miles Is one of John Painter's helpers now. Mariah married Chuck Bisell and they live on the Painter farm. Mariah has made herself a great asset to the Painter land farms.

gee, small world. we were going to by land from claude hoffman on norris brook rd but when we saw this land waldo and olive wood had for sale, i fell in love with it. we live right around the corner from joe and annette miles. very very nice family.
It was June 1972 when my sister and mate left that farm to move to Florida. On their way south they traveled right thru that hurricane Agnes, The one that did so much damage all thru this area and the southern tier of New york state. Can you picture a family of six and their family dog, in one vehicle, moving their belongings thru a hurricane?

My sister and her husband tore down the old knoxville firehall for the lumber to build the house Joe and Annette live in. I hauled that lumber up the hill from the firehall to that farm, behind my little ford tractor. Hard to believe it has been almost forty years ago.
