Is Pittsburgh slated to become the next Ft. Worth, TX?

The Barnett shale formation lies directly underneath Ft. Worth, Texas, a metro area of some 1.6 million. Urban drilling has become commonplace in the suburban areas there and even in downtown Ft. Worth. Any open field can be a potential drilling site for a gas well. Range Resources is one of the companies that is leasing drilling rights in the western suburbs of Pittsburgh. This includes Collier Township where gas companies have been encountering a mild form of backlash from local residents. Township commissioners have been working on an ordinance to restrict drilling to only certain areas of the township. These developments raise questions about what can be learned from urban drilling in Texas. At the very least gas companies, such as Range, will need to undertake a very serious educational effort to satisfy the needs of urban dwellers for information about gas drilling and its aftermath.
