Are they allowed to drill under the river and if so who gets the money. If not how close can they get?

Which river?

There will be surface drilling setbacks from the river. As far as under the river, it is a non-issue - no chance that the fracs reach the surface.

Jason, if you are asking about the Ohio river, they seem to end the laterals at the rivers edge.

They don't seem to cross state lines with drilling units.

Jason, you raise an interesting question.  There is a good bit of acreage underneath the Ohio river that is not being developed.  

Philip. That is exactly why I asked. TheoOhio runs right Down the middle of some of the best shale in the country. It added up to a large amount of acreage. Why are they not going under?
Just think. The Ohio river is 961 miles long. I know a fraction of that is located over Marcellus and or Utica. But if you add up the acreage we are talking about a very large amount. I'm not sure of the exact amount but it is enough to matter
I hope this is close. From Pitts to Parkersburg it is appx 187 miles. Avg width is 850 yards. This is appx 57800 acres. I'm not even going to entertain the dollar amount.

Some time ago I was told by someone who should know, that Chesapeake was planning on drilling under the Ohio River in Beaver County. I was told the Army Corps of Engineers had control with drilling under the river. It appears the paperwork and extra problems wasn't worth it. Dunno for sure.

 I have river frontage and plan to include it in any leasing in the future.  I believe the minerals under township & county roads also belong to landowners on either side of the road.  Add up all the pavement and gravel roads that are parts of Units...serious acreage there.

Reading your link supports what Pa Game officials have said to us. It also supports this: Anyone (not commercial enterprises) can walk/canoe/etc on any creek/stream that passes through your property, as long as they stay in the water. 

Great point as well. Who is getting that money.
