I’m interested in finding out what unbiased, responsible sources are available regarding shale gas drilling. The websites I’ve found most helpful in trying to understand the risks and opportunities involved are these:

      http://www.fractracker.org/

      http://www.gasdrillingtechnotes.org/

      http://www.texassharon.com/links/barnett-shale-blogs/

I realize that community groups opposing fracking might be considered biased, but from what I can tell, most communities in shale gas territory started out supportive. In places where that has changed, as in Sharon, TX, it might be useful to understand why.  But I’d be interested to hear recommendations.

Are there other ways to disinfect H2O besides using chlorine that don't have the harmful trihalomethanes as by-product? I've always had city water everywhere I've lived, and never had to worry about this issue. I am familiar with venting and aeration as ways to rid water of methane. I'm trying to get a handle on exactly how problematic methane in water can get since it is naturally occurring in several areas. It is non-toxic in itself, yet can be an explosion risk in a large enough concentration. It's why venting is advised, right?

"Candy's dandy, but liquor's quicker" as Ogden Nash once opined. Not sure what Ogden would say about drinking methane. I'm pretty sure, he'd prefer Johnnie Red. ;-)

Carol, compliments to you for starting this discussion...and thank each of you that stopped by to add to it.

I wish we had a 'favorite' for keeping discussions in our profile page for reference...for I would make this one of my favs.

Thanks, VG. I'm finding it very helpful myself.

Helpful how?  Hopeful of converting people to help push your own agenda, but how it this site helpful to you Carol when your mind is made up and has been for several months?

"How to become a fractivist" - posted September 11, 2011 - Please look just above the Comments section for who wrote this: .  By the way, I have taken screen shots in case it goes missing.

Quote - from your page: "Those fracking fluids – millions of gallons - have been dumped in streams, on fields. Or held in open pits where migrating birds land and die. Pits that overflow when rains are heavy. Pits that allow the fluids to seep into the ground around them."  Where was your proof for those comments?

With your "What do YOU think are good sites - here are a few of mine, oh, here are a few more, oh, I forgot one" - Why can't you just come on these sites and be honest about who you are and your purpose?  As others have said before, "it's called GoMarcellus" not "StopMarcellus"!

Kudo's to Sherry for saying what we all know!

We're all trying to play nice with Carol while she tries to enlighten us with her pretense of wanting to really learn.  Yawn.

It's quite obvious, Carol, that you are on a fising expedition.  You really should try another pond, as the fish here are smarter than the ones you're trying to catch.

Hey, let's give Carol the benefit of the doubt. Her blog post sounds sincere enough. This is an opportunity to help turn her thinking around and hopefully broaden her understanding of the situation. She sounds like an intelligent person to me. All she wanted in the first place were a few references.

Mark,

Here is a great website for you.

Perhaps Carol is the sacrificial lamb so to speak.  She has tied up lord only how much time of the members here that would be better off of we utilized the time to help fight for out rights!

There has been hundreds of responses to her which has had no effect. But those responses might change a individuals view if it was in a locality were anti frackers are attempting to dominate,

Here is an example Ohio Mansfield area.  see http://www.mountvernonnews.com/local/12/02/17/drilling-permits-issu...

While we are wasting our time with Carol we could be posting a devastating blow to these locals that as you can see will do anything to ban fracking. In case you didn't know it most politicians suck into belief the loudest get there way!

If these jerks get there way there will be no fracking, no leases, no royalty!

Another example http://www.salemnews.net/page/content.comment/id/551189.html?nav=50...

Spend a few minutes there to protect your rights. We know where we stand here at GOMS but that does not get read in a local newspaper.

Mark - I find myself chuckling at your comment. I haven't spent enough time on this site to find out who the other anti's are (and anti what? I'm not really anti-fracking - I'm anti reckless, unregulated, "you can't prove anything, so shut-up" fracking).

Anyhow, whoever they are, I'm fairly sure they're not getting "directions" from anyone. There's no big "movement" directing the conversation - on either side. Just lots of people trying to sort out what's true, what's not.

Sherry - thanks for visiting my blog! I'm always happy to have new readers. And don't worry that the post will go missing - I'm fairly sure every post I've written has offended someone or another. My goal, in my blog, is to explore the issues for myself - not to get anyone to agree with me.

The difficulty we all face in this issue, as in so many, is that it's hard to find accurate information and hard to know who to trust. We used to think our papers or tv reporters were telling the truth - those days are gone. And we used to believe our public leaders. Hard to do that anymore. Everyone has an agenda - everyone has their own spin. But I'm happy to share my purpose: I want to understand what's happening in the world around me, I want good jobs, fair pay, safe water, healthy kids. My guess is most of us want the same.

Somehow we've let ourselves believe that there's an "us" and a "them" - and that once we know which is which we can just shout at each other, or ignore each other. But that doesn't really work. We have to find solutions that work for as many of us as possible - and so far, in this debate, that hasn't happened.

In any case, I DO find this discussion really helpful. The sites you've posted are some of the most helpful. So thanks.

The problem, if you will, is not one's pursuit of truth, it is more one's ability to discern the truth.  Independent studies continue to come to the same conclusion.  Some people's fervent desire to search for something that's not there can be frustrating.

The study, released at a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Vancouver, British Columbia, found that many problems ascribed to fracking actually have other causes, such as "casing failures or poor cement jobs."

By all means continue to search!  Just don't let the search be more important than the find.
