Some of you folks probably don't get the Akron Beacon Journal but a reporter named Bob Downing has been writing some interesting articles about the Utica drilling.

Gas exploration sparks economic surge in Carroll County
http://www.ohio.com/news/local/gas-exploration-sparks-economic-surg...

"Other counties with permits are Tuscarawas (seven)"

"The company (CHK) has boosted the number of drilling rigs in Ohio from five to eight this year.  It may have as many as 20 rigs in Ohio by late 2012 and 40 by 2014, the company said."

"Ohio is expecting as many as 4,000 wells drilled into the Utica shale in the next four years as more rigs are moved into the state. Site preparation takes three to four weeks. Drilling takes three to five weeks more. Fracturing a well takes seven to 10 days."

There is a slight discrepancy between the following articles:

"Carroll County Leads Ohio With Forty Nine Utica Shale Drilling Permits" 03/01/2012
http://shale.typepad.com/utica_shale/
They show (138) permits and list them from 12/14/2011 thru 2/24/2011 (with other listings in their archives)

But yet the OHio.com has this nice interactive map with a title bar that says (151) Horizontal Permits and (52) Drilled Wells as of 2/19/2012
http://drilling.ohio.com/ineractive-utica-shale-map/

I guess it is all on when you start counting.  None of them are on my property, but it is interesting to watch the numbers change.

The first article below is interesting and hasn't been widely distributed.  It doesn't make any comment about the well casing and problems with the cementing around the wells (which is probably the major areas where a leak could contaminate groundwater).  I have felt that "what happens at 6,000 feet down, stays at 6,000 ft down" and it would take a significant amount of time to make it to the surface.  Not that there can't be drilling problems, it is just that fracking is probably not the big problem.  But that is just one mans opinion.

This is the first of a two-day series of reports about fracking, the growing energy drilling process, and how it has affected business and the environment in Texas. The stories were reported by the NewsOutlet, a collaboration between the Youngstown State University journalism program, Kent State University and the University of Akron in conjunction with professional media, including WYSU-FM radio and the Vindicator (Youngstown), the Beacon Journal and Rubber City Radio (Akron).

Unfortunately the following blog doesn't contain any dates.  Makes it hard to put in context.
