Ian Urbina did another hit piece on natural gas at the New York Times but got his facts all wrong and drew the wrong conclusions, putting himself on the wrong road:

The rig (drill) floor is a dangerous place.

Everyone involved in the drilling operation knows that.

Access to the rig floor is restricted to only those persons who know exactly what to do and belong there.

The safety of a person on the rig floor is dependent upon their actions and the actions of all others on the rig floor.

Anyone on the drill floor who does not adhere to all rules of safety is immediately run off.

Rough necks know how to have fun; but on the drill floor it is all serious, all the time.

Local hires would be fine, once they have been around long enough to prove themselves ready to be tested on the drill floor.

Absolutely agree Jack.  Have had several 'discussions' about why more locals are not being used.  Some  don't get the concept that a drill site is not a training site.  I was actually talking more about the truck drivers, company and locals as that's more where I've heard the 'zero' tolerance talked about.

Great discussion that reflects the Philosophy of Science - Interesting where this thread has travelled - Each point-of-view or perspective is valid.

I have followed Tom Shepstone's articles and commentary for a number of months now and have yet to see any evidence of biased reporting or statements. To the contrary, he has been very diligent, even-handed, and informative in his refutation of the blatant, non-fact-based articles and commentaries from all sources which appear to be anti-natural gas.

From my perspective, I would take issue with virtually any NYT left-leaning article relative to almost any subject. The referenced article should have been printed on absorbent paper in order that it might have some redeeming value for use in one's household. I am inclined to recite a quote from the late-nineteenth-century composer, Max Reger, who, upon reading a particularly scathing review of one of his concerts, replied with this note to the critic: "I am sitting in the smallest room in my house. Your review is before me. In a moment, it will be behind me."

As Tom very clearly pointed out, the data upon which Urbina based his statements was used out of context and in a way to promote and support the ill-conceived fear-mongering that he spewed in this article. There is so much of this same sort of trash emanating from the NYT and other liberal rags that, unless someone with the sense, fortitude, and ability to logically and rationally review the entire dataset in question, the reader is led down the path that the writer wishes him to blindly follow.

I, for one, am truly grateful for the thoughtful and well-informed input from Tom, Jack Straw, and many others who contribute their expertise and factual commentary to this forum.
