Does anyone know why they test for several consecutive days?

Summer-

Seismic surveys are taken along parallel "lines." Depending upon the geography of the shoot, it might take many days to acquire the data. Offshore, its weather and sea state dependent, and oftentimes it takes even longer to acquire all the digits.

Brian,  as the seismic truck is testing, what is the distance it is able to read from the truck location or is that depend upon the terrain?   If dependent on terrain for example in Texas could truck test 25 miles or in hilly southeast Ohio five miles from the truck?

Just want to clarify your question if you don't mind.

What do you mean when you say 'test'?

If you're referring to true tests or experiments then the purpose of the multi-day activity is to refine acquisition parameters so that the best seismic image of the subsurface can be generated during seismic acquisition operations.

If you're referring to routine acquisition operations, then as Brian mentioned, a number of days are required in order to record enough seismic data in a way that will enable the company to generate an adequate image of the subsurface geology.

Having observed the thumper trucks on a recurring basis going up the road the past few days, I am curious what the need for the repetition was.

Without talking to the crew it is honestly difficult to give a definitive answer. What I can tell you though is that during normal operations the vibrators usually traverse a line / road only once.

That's what I might have expected; once. They've definitely been up the road several times.

It's possible, though equipment is generally very reliable (i.e. usually <2% drop-out / failure rate) so I wouldn't expect the crew to need to make multiple passes just to verify the data.

Were the vibrators actually working; i.e. pads down & shaking, during each trip down the road or were they simply driving back and forth? If the vibrators were shaking every trip or most trips, then they were probably conducting a series of tests.

When these helicopters went over our area my, then 8 year old and I couldn't have had more fun. We even ran through the woods and found the dropped bags one time.

Great picture Gary.  My husband's seen the chopper with the bags hanging twice around us but didn't have the camera with him.  Was hoping to get a pic to put with the pictures of the drilling for shot holes.

I find this really hard to believe. What you describe has only ever happened to me once during my 38 year career as a geophysicist.
