I was referring to Tioga County, not all of Pennsylvania.  Nor was I  suggesting that T/BR exploration led to "discovery of the Marcellus; it's been known the Marcellus was present in TC for a long time.  And, the Talisman spokesman was speaking for Talisman's experience, not the industry's. 

I stand by my representation of those ~2000-2006 Tioga County leases as "T/BR leases" When the bonus jumped to $200, they morphed into "T/BR and maybe Marcellus leases"..

Interesting, as I mentioned, the state geologist at the time explained it to me in 06-07 that the Marcellus was something they stumbled upon while drilling wells in about 05-06.

It makes sense to me that the O&G companies had an idea there would be shale gas in PA, Tioga specifically, since they were there in the 70s looking for oil.

Until the fracking technique was developed, the gotcha with developing shale formations was how to extract the gas (and/or oil) known to be there.  Credit for the first fracked (vertical) Marcellus Shale well in PA is to Range Resources, in SW PA.

I was in the business then, signing leases with all the same companies, and there was never any suggestion that all they wanted was Trenton Black-River. There was a brief period of time when some in the industry thought the TBR might extend down from New York, particularly in the Rome Trough area, but this would never have impacted a particularly wide band of acreage.

aren't there a few producing tbr wells between troy, pa and the new York border? I remember talisman drilling a few in the rt. 14 area before the Marcellus became all the rage.

I don't think so. There may have been a few drilled, but none were succesful. Ultra tried one in southeastern Potter County, for instance, but they had problems even getting to the TBR initially. It's quite deep, and the geology just changed around the state line. The Corning area was about as far south as anything productive was found. (Although there were some nice successes in the same general formation in West Virginia.)

What was the name of the well that, I believe FORTUNA drilled back in 05-06 10-20 miles as the crow flies west of Blossburg that was very prolific? Was it a Marcellus well with laterals?

My guess (and it's just a guess) is that you're talking about the Marshlands prospect that Ultra drilled aound then. It targeted the TBR but they had lots of technical problems with the well. Various stories about it circulated, but the upshot was that no offsets were ever drilled below the Marcellus, so one has to assume that the deeper formations weren't that promising. The Marcellus there was decent, but definitely not profitable at today's prices. So activity in the area around the old well has pretty much dried up.

 That old saying you never really  know what's under you till the drill bit hits the ground seems applicable in Middlebury and Chatham.Penn State will have to revise there description of the area since Shell has drilled these deep wells and testing further out.

 You really have to respect Shells work ethic they don't quit, its not over till they sing.They could have listened to all the experts describing Northern Tioga county as over cooked,over mature,low toc,bad rock and more.They put there science people on it and decided it wasn't drilled to the proper depths to maximize output now they drill to 11-12 thousand feet and over 4 thousand foot laterals and production is better than we could have hoped for. Things are looking a lot better now than they did a year ago.

At that depth, would that still be shale gas from Marcellus or is it some other play.
