I got mail today wanting permission to do seismic tests on our 35 acres. We are under lease and I see no reason to go forward for $5 an acre. As I understand, they do make a bit of a mess getting the equipment in and out (all our property is woods). Am I wrong???

They are wanting to do testing on us also. I said," well they are already drilling, and they are going to continue drilling anyway". She said this was 3D testing and they are going to sell it to the drilling companies. I told her we were not interested and she said with our acreage that the drilling company might want it anyway and that they could do it because it is in our contract. I said, " well then they will just have to make us do it, we are not agreeing to it". They want to give us a few crumbs at $5/acre and turn around and sell the drilling company the wedding cake at hundreds of thousands of dollars, but probably much more.
If you use springs as a water source it may not be worth the risk. How bad do you need the $175?
I do have 3 springs, but we have a water well. I never thought about them. The questionnaire that was sent did ask about wells and springs. I just didn't want the trees an underbrush mashed and crushed. At this point, my feeling is a big NO.
They drill small holes in your land and set off explosive charges.
fwiw, we have 8 springs and 2 drilled water wells on 80 acres and the seismic testing didn't bother any of them.
I'd say if they are selling the info, then it should be just like your O&G lease, You should get 20% of the sales. at least 12.5%. only fair!
old woman, Please elaborate and show us what they did to your land. How did the seismic operation flood your woods? Did they drill into a spring and give it a new opening to the surface? I'm sure many landowners here will be extremely interested in your situation.
Here is a video that shows the process:
Greg, They did our property last summer-also at $5 an acre. They did knock some underbrush down but did not really leave a big footprint, the equipment was about the size of a tracked bobcat. A few saplings were knocked over where the undergrowth was the heaviest. They were VERY careful to go via the routes we suggested and to park where we asked them to. All the holes were filled to ground level and even this year are still level with the surface. They used a pea gravel mix which is still visible in some places. All springs, wells, cisterns and septic tanks were marked and setback from them was the same as for all dwellings with block or concrete foundations. The contract said 300' but the closest they were to any of the above was about 500'. When they set off the charges the closest ones were very audible but not enough to make the horses in the same field do anything but look. That company was Front Runner seismic.
If there are gaps in the 3D survey they will come back with a offer higher than $5. The data is worth far more that. As long as landowners agree to $5 that is what they will pay.
The company that was at our farm was Seitel. I have nothing but Praise for this company. Very respectful, called every time they came out and fixed our creek passing. That was a $3,000.00 fix and they paid for it ! It was too narrow for their small machine and they brought in the rock to make it wider. When it was time for the blasting ( Nothing more than a poof ) they waited until I was with my stallion before they ever got out of their trucks. Really nice people !

AboutWhat makes this site so great? Well, I think it's the fact that, quite frankly, we all have a lot at stake in this thing they call shale. But beyond that, this site is made up of individuals who have worked hard for that little yard we call home. Or, that farm on which blood, sweat and tears have fallen. [ Read More ] |
