I live in Madison Township, Guernsey County and am leased with Gulfport Energy.  My lease expires in February of 2016 with Gulfport retaining the right to renew at the pre-determined, per-acre amount.  Today I received a letter on Gulfport Energy letterhead indicating that they have received interest in my lease from Tri-Star Holdings and need me to fill out a W-9 providing my social security number and send it back in the pre-addressed envelope.  The envelope has Gulfport's Headquarters address which seems legit....all the other pieces don't seem right to me.  I am wondering if any of you others have received this letter as well?  I am going to contact Gulfport on Monday but wanted to put this out there today to get feedback from you all.  Thanks!

They should already have that info ,gotten when they leased you. They should have some explaining to do before you go any farther IMHO

if I leased with Gulfport I be asking how Tri-Star holdings got involved in my lease and like bo said they should already have your info from the original lease when they paid your first bonus ....even if tri star is the original leaser the info should have

transferred with the lease....please let us know what you find out from Gulfport on Monday

From the most recent earnings call for Gulfport:

Jason Wangler - Wunderlich Securities

That's helpful. And just as we look at '16, without trying to get anything out of you there, just more looking at the acreage position. How do you see that playing out as far as where are we now on the held by production side and where do you see that kind of going as we move throughout even this year, and just from a planning perspective looking at 2016 and beyond?

Michael Moore - President and Chief Executive Officer

"Well, certainly at some point, probably later this year, we will talk about the total acreage that we have held as of the end of the year. Keep in mind, the majority, almost all of our acreage has five-year leases with five-year options. The 30,000 acres we acquired this year from AEU has a really easy HPP requirement with a small drilling commitment every year. Obviously, as we adjust our drilling schedule, our leasehold requirements may increase, that’s certainly something that we look at. We are okay paying renewals instead of drilling and we will do that. We are doing that in a small way this year as well. But make sure you understand we have a strategy to HPP, our acreage in the primary and secondary term. So it's something that we focus on but, again, we have been drilling for a while now so we have got quite a bit held".

Sounds like Gulfport is open to renewal of leases that have not yet been drilled.  How Tri-Star figures in the equation, I can only guess at the tangled web they weave...   Who owns Tri-Star?   Gulfport?

Thanks all. Those are the assumptions I made and that's why everything about this looks suspicious except for the return envelope having a legit address. My inlaws, who leased 5 years ago as well, received the same letter. When we originally leased, it was the very early stages of leasing and we all leased through a broker, Tri-Star Holdings. I have documentation from Gulfport dated 5 years ago, that they have acquired our mineral rights/lease from Tri-Star Holdings however this recent letter indicates that Gulfport is just now acquiring the rights and lease from Tri-Star and need the W-9 to make any future payments. That's where it starts to sound shady. I will get to the bottom of it with Gulfport beginning with a call to them tomorrow. I will certainly post my findings.
Thanks again everyone for your feedback.

Sounds like they are getting ready to renew your secondary term and will be paying you, just verify before returning the w-9

I am in Harrison county my lease is up in march 2016 no letter yet
