We are in north central Ohio and have an opportunity to join a landowners association.  It will cost us a dollar an acre up to 300 acres, so that the most anyone pays is $300.00, regardless of how many acres are owned.  The memebership will vote on whether to accept a negotiated lease.  If the lease is accepted, there is an additional fee of 3% of the lease bonus payment which goes to the consultant and the lawyer.  There is no fee charged for any royalties.

We ould appreciate any input from other landowners that have finalized a lease through a landowners organization.  Was this a beneficial experience?  Would you recommend joining?  Have there been any negative experiences?

James, we are in Richland county Ohio, Butler township, which is in N.E. Richland county.  COLA (Central Ohio Landowner's Association) is the name of the group.  Members have signed with COLA from Morrow, Ashland, Knox, Crawford and Huron counties.  There may be other counties as well.  The final date for sign up is July 1st.  There is a meeting today.  Following is my e-mail re. the meeting.

Bob Rea, is COLA's consultant.  He formed the ALOV (Association of Landowners of the Ohio Valley) in Columbiana County, and successfully finalized a very lucrative landowner friendly lease with Chesapeak involving 75,000 acres this spring.  Dick Emens of Columbus ohio is the attorney who is drawing up the COLA lease.  He specializes in oil/gas landowner friendly leases, and has been prominent in drafting legislation.  They both are also the consultants for the nearby Mohigan Valley Landowner's Association in southern Ashland County.   

One of the unique issues the Mohican Landowner group is addressing is the many leases Columbia Gas bought for their storage wells and pipe lines back in the late 1800's and early 1900's.  These leases cover most of southern Ashland and Richland county.  Columbia Gas just sold these land leases to Chesapeake this spring for possible drilling, but kept their rights to the storage wells and gas lines.  Since most of these leases were written in the late 1800's-early 1900's, Dick Emens is questioning  the validity of Chesapeake's  drilling rights, and has initiated  discussions  with Chesapeake. 

We have become members of COLA, because of the expertise and strong moral character of both Bob Rea and Dick Emmens.

I joined COLA (Central Ohio Landowners Assoc) recently. I am a small landowner and will never be approached for a well (thank goodness) but could be forced to pool with those around me. I joined COLA to protect my water, my rights, and my property into the future. Their terms were reasonable and the team they have put together is top-notch.

 

I've been researching "fracking" and natural gas drilling for 3 years; they seem to have covered ALL the bases.

 

Bob Rea and Mr Emens, both who spoke to and are working with the group, are well-educated sources.

 

I would encourage large landowners to talk to their neighbors and ask them to join--I think 7 acres is the least you can own.

Thanks for the good info.. I was fortunate to get on the "waiting list" as one gentleman at ALOV put it, when i called them maybe three or four weeks back.

I got a call from ALOV a couple weeks later telling me to go to the Chevy dealer in Champion, OH (Trumbull county), sign up and pay the $60 admin. fee and they would include me in this last go around (I couldnt get there fast enough, i tell you!).

The bidding is to be over here maybe next week and alot of us are waiting for some good news, i hope!

Has anyone you know ever gotten a check from their efforts with ALOV, signed by the winning bidders, yet?
