That was others' interpretation; the word I used was "hassle". Lynn's response was to the point. I normally do my grocery shopping in Elmira, so merely having to wait a minute or two at a single traffic light would not be a factor.
Now, if you want to play "Can you top this?", I've driven in Italy (lane splitting) and negotiated South Jersey traffic circles with summer Sunday evening traffic returning from the shore.
The truck traffic in Wellsboro can be a real hassle. More than once I've seen trucks with very large/long loads tie up the main intersections for 2 or 3 light cycles, taking all the lanes and making vehicles at the lights back up so they could make the turn. Traffic is often backed up solid all the way through town. A couple of weeks ago I some some huge metal box-things on trailers stuck on Central Ave. They were literally against the curb on one side and almost touching the gas lights on the median on the other side. Then they hit a block where the parked cars had not been moved. They had obviously already been sitting there a while; people were scurrying around (probably trying to get people to move their cars). Fortunately cars could turn onto the side streets to get around them.
Wellsboro isn't designed for that kind of traffic, but there's no easy way for large trucks to avoid going through town.
An acquintance had his car totalled by a tanker at the light in Mansfield. It was one of those situations where vehicles were jammed up in the intersection waiting to turn. The light had just turned in favor of the tanker but the intersection hadn't cleared. So, opting for the traffic light route is not automatically safer. One city "tradition" I do miss is police officers who know how to direct traffic.
It sounds like Wellsboro is just 'joining the crowd'....Troy and Towanda have been impossible with traffic for two or three years now. It DOES sound diddly compared to large cities, but IS a huge difference in Bradford county and in such a short time.
Tonight I was waiting for my ride at the hospital in Sayre..........and after a bit I realized it was the ONLY place I have been around here for some time where NO gas-related tankers or dump trucks or equipment vehicles were travelling. Oh my....we surely aren't 'in Kansas' anymore.
In terms of 'change' to one's own property...yet another possible development is a developer building a 'man camp' on land abutting you....this is being attempted in Troy township. Stay on top of things; see of there is any way to get some sort of zoning in place...................though the area is not known to be agreeable to such things.
Followup: The lure of a good stock-up sale won. Actually, the traffic was light enough that it was a no-brainer. Also found that contrary to what I'd assumed, fewer people use the DMV Photo Center on Saturday than on Wednesday. And that Sears has moved from the old Ames store since the last time I was there.
Still, I read that 5 traffic lights are being added to wellsboro?
How do you local folks feel about that?
In general I'm not thrilled that our 'little town' is growing so fast. I don't know about 5 lights being added, though. They are putting in new lights where there are already traffic lights...at the green and on East ave. They've also upgraded the WALK signs at the intersections in town.
The only one that I'm aware of that's new is the one at the Pizza Hut, and they've also added turn lanes. Sad to say, we NEED that light. It was always difficult getting in and out of the road where the McDonalds is (coming into town on 287/6 you could sit for 5 minutes behind someone trying to make a left toward McDonalds ). Now with the increased traffic it's almost impossible to get in and out of there. Sometimes I can't make a left out of the Tops parking lot, either...I have to turn right and go around the block. With lights stopping the traffic at Pizza Hut and the Wellsboro Diner (assuming the lights are timed properly) we might be able to get out of the Tops parking lot.
Hey, I was just in town; as I thought, 4 of the traffic lights are replacements for the ones already there, and the one at the Pizza Hut is new. I got to use the new WALK signals at the Wellsboro Diner intersection. Man, are they annoying. They beep continuously, and yell "WAIT!" when you push the button. Having lived in Philadelphia, I usually don't even use crosswalks, let alone wait for lights, but that intersection is pretty busy.
Wellsboro should have had a bypass long ago for Rt. 6 like the one for Rt. 15 around Mansfield. Perhaps it should have ran from the somewhere north of Darrow's car dealership up over the hill southeast to strike Rt. 6 again out past the old SPCA. I have not really lived in Wellsboro in 10 years, so my landmarks may be way out dated. Anyway, the economy and politics of the State did not warrant paying for a bypass as was done on the north-south corridor of Rt. 15 twenty years ago. I am sure the merchants of Wellsboro did not want the town bypassed at all at that time. Things have changed a bit now. Shell is poying up for a lot of road work. In the future, Catlin
Hollow may see major upgrades or some kind of bypass may be created to speed up the movement of trucks and equipment and to make the roads safer in Wellsboro. This is just an idle guess on my part of course.
The worst intersection with my short neck is rt 6 and rt 660 right at the Shell yard, you take your life in your hands trying to get across rt 6 or on to it.
Finally!!! ... In Mansfield there is now an official right turn lane at the light at the intersection of old 15 and 6, going North on 15 (at the bank). .So what took so long to do the obvious?

AboutWhat makes this site so great? Well, I think it's the fact that, quite frankly, we all have a lot at stake in this thing they call shale. But beyond that, this site is made up of individuals who have worked hard for that little yard we call home. Or, that farm on which blood, sweat and tears have fallen. [ Read More ] |
