Hello guys, I am in a Philosophy class at Penn State and I have to prepare a 10 minute speech on a community disputed problem. Well since I am very interested in the marcellus and utica shale I figured this would be the easiest! I am for shale drilling, but I want to hear from those who are against. Please give me your opinions, and if you can have a reference to back it up. For example, if you say you are for marcellus shale drilling because it stimulates the economy, please post some examples of how it is stimulating the economy, or a website.
Alright! I'm open to why your are for or against gas shale drilling! Thanks!

Hello fellow Penn Stater, I used to drink down at the Brick House, anyhow.
I am for drilling becuase it is a domestic energy source and becuase it has lower green house emissions than coal. It also burns much cleaner than gasoline also.

Here are some great facts
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency calculated the potential benefits of CNG versus gasoline based on the inherently cleaner-burning characteristics of natural gas, summarized in Clean Alternative Fuels: Compressed Natural Gas.
It also has the potential to may me Clampett rich.

thanks for the reply! This is great information! It will be included! I knew Nat gas was cleaner, but I didn't know it was THAT clean!
Here is a link to a local article relating to "Fracking" in Ohio. One of a few articles on the drilling process that have been run in our local paper.

I consider myself a lover of nature but I have a resource ( oil ) and it is worth a lot of money. So what do I do? You see, I am part of the fifth generation to live on this farmland. My family began here in a log cabin and farmed with horses. My dad used to tell me about how he was one of the first people in this community to have a car. Well, that car was wrecked ( along with many others) and the cabin burned down ( as did the first barn) and the road has changed shape over the years as it was widened and straightened to allow wagons then cars and then the school bus to pass through. So what is my point? The world changes and we have to adapt as it changes. When the settlers first came into this area they harvested the wildlife. Then they harvested the trees. Then they harvested the native sandstone for gristmills. Then in the 1800s they found oil. The first boom came and went and after it was gone the farmers went back to tilling the land and they adapted to their new reality. Farmers are either very smart, very stupid or tough as hell. I suspect that they are the last. Anyway, I think that most pollution caused by fracking or oil and gas exploration is caused by crooks and thieves that do not follow proper operating procedures. They are akin to a landman that lies to get what he wants. I feel that the petroleum industry can be safe if it is regulated by the good guys in the industry. Most of them are upstanding and they dont like having their reputations besmirched by the bums that dont care about anything. Also I think they are having problems with fracking polluting water in the east because the Marcellus is closer to the surface and so closer to the water table.
uh....duh......dunno........whut???.............can't think straight cuz I drank tooo much beer at P.S.

AboutWhat makes this site so great? Well, I think it's the fact that, quite frankly, we all have a lot at stake in this thing they call shale. But beyond that, this site is made up of individuals who have worked hard for that little yard we call home. Or, that farm on which blood, sweat and tears have fallen. [ Read More ] |
