Cabot starts using pad drilling to reduce environmental impact

Cabot Oil and Gas has recently started using fit-for-purpose rigs. These have been optimized for pad drilling. They have a smaller footprint than conventional rigs and minimize damage to environmentally sensitive surface areas, and, all the while, get world-class drilling results. One of Cabot's Susquehana Co. wells just produced 1/2 Bcf of natural gas in its first 60 days. Patterson has built fit for purpose rigs for Chief, who recently unveiled one in central PA. My company, EXCO-North Coast Energy is waiting is waiting on one for its use in North East PA. These fit for purpose rigs are designed for the Marcellus Shale -- they are more compact, have telescoping parts that make them easier to maneuver around windy PA country roads, and can be fit with hydraulic feet that allow the rig to "walk" from well to well when a company is drilling multiple wells on one pad, as opposed to being moved to each well in a more traditional and laboriuos fashion. I have heard that they operate a little quieter as well(although thats relative to the person hearing it).

Here's a news article that I came across that gives a little more color on these rigs.

Hi Vic-- It probably wasn't clear from the way I posted it, but the fit-for-purpose rigs are covered in the Cabot wiki page under Latest Operating Results. Here's a direct link to the definition I gave: http://www.waytogoto.com/wiki/index.php/Fit-for-purpose_rig. I am no expert, and this is just the best definition that I could cobble together after a few minutes of research. If anyone else has a better explanation of fit-for-purpose, I am all ears. --Tom
