Showing a gas well to someone that formally opposed it!

I brought a lady to a gas well last saturday in PA. She informed me that in seneca county (geneva area) they were fighting the development of natural gas. They DIDNT WANT ANYONE fracking with there water! Being in the business kinda-sorta, I needed to drop off a part in PA- so I invited her to come with me. I showed her the (alleged)"bad congestion of trucks", the "bad" traffic, and the horrible lanscape it left. She was VERY surprised at what she saw. The traffic was light on 14 south to troy pa, hardly any trucks, and could NOT belive the end product they had left! Muddy- however, the land DIDN'T consume acres, and was impressed by the entire industry. They (company men) were polite (as usual), helpful, and very knowledgeable. They answered all questions, and she walked away very surprised, and assured that all would be fine. It is amazing what you can acomplish by educating the public on this issue. It would be to the industry's benifit to actually take folks out on a couple of these wells. She walked away changing her mind on the issue!

I take people out to our locations also to show them that we take care of our leases. The tank battery enclosures are clean and tanks and equipment painted up nicely.I,m proud of our leases and take pride in them,if only everyone took this approach.I've worked in Alaska and know how to take care of the environment.

Excellent post, Sue, and a wonderful idea.
I regularly visit drilling sites and speak with the employees for my own information and because I take photos of the wells and general area. As you say, the drilled sites are reclaimed so as to be almost impossible to find and the truck traffic is gone after the initial drilling and fracking anyway.
The people who believe gas drilling will turn our area into an "industrial zone" are misinformed. Showing them the real deal goes a long way to counter the horror stories shown in newspapers (who use disaster to sell papers, after all).

Sue, you may want to check with Range Resources, if they're operating in your area. They already do what you're suggesting, but only with their land contractors and new employees. If they received enough requests, they may decide to do this with interested UNLEASED local area landowners. It's worth a try. Ask for the Public Relations Department. Good luck...

It is amazing most how much garbage is spewed by the media trying to stir up distrust of the gas companies and drilling and completion operations that go on. Most of the negative articles are written by out of state reporters who have never set foot on a drilling location. While there are sometimes roads that get torn up, the gas companies pay for repairs and while it can be busy and noisy, most of the work is being done in out of the way locations. The economic impact on the area is fantastic. Landowners making money from leasing and royalties, local businesses recieving much more business, and local people finding well-paid employment.

I have attended many tours and lead tours - I think it is good to be open and honest and get local citizens on site to see the process.
