If fracking fluids are found to be the cause of the illnesses at LeRoy High School, would you change your position on fracking?

The symptoms the children at LeRoy High School in LeRoy New York are suffering from are very similar to the neurological symptoms shown in the movie "Split Estate".   The movie documents what citizens in Rocky Mountain States have been living with for years, primarily in the towns of Dish Texas and Denton Texas.

It's easier to accuse a bunch of girls of hysteria than it is to take the time to see what's really causing the problem. Which is the point. You're right. No one has connected their illnesses to fracking because the school won't even admit there were spills, and won't test the soil. Which proves nothing. Which, from what I can see, is always the goal - to make sure nothing gets proved.

So Carol, your research shows that the Leroy School wells have been drilled and fractured just like thousands of other shallow gas wells in NYS. Why have we not then seen medical issues arise (if they are in fact due to frac'ing) until now?
  It seems that the wells drilled in the early 80's would have had some sort of effect on the kids in school then if frac'ing were as dangerous as you seem to believe.
  Which of the constituents of the frac'ing fluids that you found would you finger as the cause of the kids issues?

I don't think it's the questions so much as it is the answers.   What I am seeing is that the questions get answered, but the questioner doesn't like the answer.

Carol wants the answer to her worried questions to be fracking, period.  It's like the prosecutor who just wants to prosecute somebody - they no care who, just blame somebody and move on to the next case.

Joe wants to be assured that he is going to live a long and storied life drinking and bathing in the clear cool water his well currently provides him. 

From what I can discern, fracking fluid in our aquifer's doesn't seem to be very probable.  But, if one was worried enough about it, is there some type of home purifier on the market that would let Joe, (and me - though not together) relax in a nice hot bath while sipping a tall glass of iced-tea and not worry 'bout Swamp Thing comin' up through the drain?

If a full scale public water treatment plant can't remove enough of these chemicals and NORM from the waste water it is doubtful that a home filtration system would work.

Frankly, I suspect I'm in more danger dropping a fluorescent light blub on the kitchen floor than I ever will be from the local gas/oil well.

  Howard your arguments are getting old. If you will recall electrical was a evil when it was first marketed. Even while you post the industry is coming up with ways to deal with the problems that may or not happen. 

  Typically a well placement is designed to capture and retain any spill that might result from a accidental leak. However there is no containment for spills from hazmat loads on rail or highway travel.

  By the way Howard how many millions and millions of gallons of untreated waste flow into the Susquehanna River during the 2011 floods? UNTREATED WASTE?

no problem, reverse osmosis (or membrane filtration),  full scale public water treatment plants aren't as efficient as you think.....

Let me clarify that I am PRO DRILLING. It makes sense to me to invest in accessing the O&G reserves and I have a high degree of confidence that extracting these materials from a mile deep location will not effect ground water (if managed in a responsible and effective manner).

RO and UF membranes are refered to as cross-flow filters. Large volumes of pressurized liquid are circulated running past the filter surface. By creating a differential pressure from inlet edge of the filter to the outlet edge causes little molecules like H20 to pass thru the membrane as permeate. Large molecules like hydrocarbon chains return to its tank of origin as "reject". This works out very well for removing most disolved solids and emulsified oils. It requires intensive solids pre-filtration to avoid early blinding of the membrane. It is a high power intensive process due to volume and pressure of the fluid required and the type of pumps that are used.

Typical membrane filters fail when exposed to solvents and are destroyed. They perform poorly when expose to the likes of kerosene or diesel fuel (the membrane pores swell shut). Sometimes RO / ultrafiltration membranes may work, and when they do, with the volumes needed to be processed will consume alot of power.

My  point being - filtering these concoctions with the likes of RO / UF membranes will be problematic and expensive. When filters are damaged by being exposed to the wrong elements,it will cost many dollars to correct.
