This is a pic taken today of the NG processing plant being built next to the Bayer plant north of New Martinsville, WV. Mid-stream pipelines are in place with more being plowed in. Iron workers, pipe fitters and other construction trades are working. Steel mills and fabricators throughout the region churn out the iron work, pipe and tubing that arrives from all directions. The pipe yard is filled with miles of pipe waiting to be placed. Plastic manufacturers wait with anticipation for the the plants completion and its first gallons of raw materials so they can build new plants nearby. Jobs spiderweb out in all directions at each of the NG processing plants that are being built in the region in addition to the drilling, transportation and support workers already in place. Landlords are renting at double and triple monthly rates of a few years back. Soon naysayers and the I don't want to workers will have to move on to less expensive areas to whine.

Most of the people who post here, were not lucky. Most of us, valued land and busted our Tukuses paying taxes, working long hours, gambling against mother nature and liberal politicians who always threw road blocks up and continue to do so. No, Chartist....the largest industry in Ohio has and always been agriculture. Like true American capitalist, we invested, bargained, worked and now we are rewarded. What you are saying is tantamount to a welder working for a company and down the career path his company is rewarded with a hugh contract increasing his pay......he is not lucky, he worked for it. It appears that this argument of yours maybe the beginning of liberal attacks on landowners now that antifracking is dead in the water.
I think Ron that you are one of the few first generation farmers posting here. I believe most others are third, fourth, even fifth generation owners who are now in line for Utica shale wealth. My own land is 170 acres in the dry gas region which I don't expect to get drilled for 20 years or more.....
Chartist; So your royalty stream from methane has been crushed. That means you are also part of the "lucky sperm set." Your just jealous that someone else's turn to be lucky has come along.
And if you had a good methane royalty stream and didn't invest it properly for your own financial well being, then shame on you. Don't take it out on the next in line.
Fang,
Ordinarily, a popping sound would be annoying and/or alarming. However, in this case I find it quite pleasant and reassuring.
Hell, I feel comforted in knowing that you guys can't even get along with each other... a Texan doesn't even stand a chance!
I guess I'm one of those lucky 'sperm' because we inherited my family's farm. Like others we have struggled for years to keep up the property and pay the taxes. Like many we may never see a well or royalty payments in our lifetime. I have lived in mahoning co my entire life. I graduated from YSU in '74 as the steel mills died a horrible death. There were no jobs in my field but I took what I could find in order to stay in the valley. I've watched this area struggle and decline for years. Leasing our land improved our lives immeasurably but what makes me the happiest is seeing how the gas and oil boom is improving the future of this area for everyone! Hearing that companies trying to hire are finding an average of 66% failure of drug tests is depressing, but I do not believe that that will continue to be the norm. Local schools are ramping up for training-we will have skilled workers in the next year or two, plenty of time for an industry that will be here for twenty years or more. When it's time for the industry to move to a new area our skilled workers will be the 'outsiders' that keep it going. The steel mills and other companies that locate here will continue so long as there is a demand and the government doesn't regulate them out of business. Look up instead of down-we 'oldtimers' may not be around for the best part but I for one am glad to see a better future for this entire area.
If we keep lowering our energy consumption and keep increasing production we should start to see manufacturing pick up more and be more stable if more economies start to fail elsewhere in the world. We are truly fortunate to have this economic boost to our area.
Drove by this a few weeks ago, Lots of work being done, it will not take long to finish.
These projects can take years to finish. The companies are investing for the long haul. The jobs will last for a long time.
This will probably be up and running in a few months. But they will continuously be adding on capacity as more and more product and demand develops. So your both right! :-{)

AboutWhat makes this site so great? Well, I think it's the fact that, quite frankly, we all have a lot at stake in this thing they call shale. But beyond that, this site is made up of individuals who have worked hard for that little yard we call home. Or, that farm on which blood, sweat and tears have fallen. [ Read More ] |
