rex roae on October 15, 2011 made reference to an interesting EIA map.  Note that the date on the map is 2001when there was almost no information available on gas shales in the area.  http://www.eia.gov/pub/oil_gas/natural_gas/analysis_publications/ma.

These government publications do not publish information until there is sufficient info for them to stick there necks out a bit.  I did not dig into it but the map probably relates to production from shallow drilling.  The single page I looked at did not indicate any specifics.  Probably the best available info can be located at geology.com and following that site to oil and gas and then to utica and marcellus.

You might also find the results of Googling "utica shale maps" interesting.

We are planning a meeting close to your area in the next few weeks.  I can give you our information if you send me your contact information.

Thanks for the information.   There is activity all around us, maybe they'll start closing in on NW PA soon. I agree, I'd sign for $3000 an acre too.  Perhaps it will be benefical to wait until they get here, with deeper pockets.

Spoke with a Jason Hannath (Shell landman) today on the recommendation of George Brown.  Very straightforward individual.  They aren't interested in our area yet but he had some very good info.

First, he explained how big this play is and it might be worth being patient until one of the big 3, Exxon, Shell and Chevron, are up here.  The way he explained it to me, they have the resources to develop the hydrocarbonates and folks might be selling themselves short rushing to sign with a smaller company.  Also, he informed me that Shell was currently paying $3250 per acre and are starting to move into S. Venango county.

He was willing to meet at any landowners meeting to fully explain what's going on with this play if we gave him at least a couple of weeks heads up.

To be honest, I'd sign with anyone for $3k an acre but I think it might be a benefit to a lot of us to here to listen to what he has to say.

Thanks Randy!  We did a transfer of the 14.9 acres lease to us.  We own all the mineral rights on the total acreage.  I don't really have much paperwork on the lease other than the deck dates, which are 2002 and the percentage of royalties that we are to receive.   Any idea where I might be able to get lease paperwork, as we didn't get much from the gas company. You are correct that we have a small pool, as the original leaseholder has about 200 acres and we purchased the 14.9 acres from that.

Randy, thanks for the information. I printed off a couple of extra forms for my husband to give to neighboring landowners.  Does any know how HBP shallow gas wells will affect the lease?  RR said that the well is producing, so no end date in sight.  I have 48 acres of which 14.9 acres are in a shallow gas lease and I have yet to receive a royalty check since by the property in May.

I have heard that leasing separately is a lot more difficult.  Companies dont just want one or the other, they want both.  Not a 100% sure about that, it's just what i've heard.

Barbara, I would also probably be looking at leasing the layers separately too.   Thanks for your information The landowners in Lawrence County where I live is signing for $3000 an acre plus 17% royalties or at least that is what I have been told for our HOA that holds about 26 acres.  We signed yet, so that may change.

Yes Kim,  I have been contacted by a Land man.    They work for the Oil and Gass companies and do not have the landowners best interest at heart.  That is why I chose to get involved with the Northwest PA Landowners Group.   I am glad to hear that there are more eastern Crawford County landowners that have not yet signed.   That gives the Landowners group a better chance at brokering a better deal for us all if you shoud join and encourage others to do the same.   The landman wanted to lease from the center of the earth to the surface for a small signing bonus and 8.5% royality.  You just need to look thru the information on this site to see Marcelus leases alone that have received above $5,000 per acre and royalities as high as 20%.  The Utica shale layer is thought to be a lot richer than the Marcelus.    We who live in Eastern Crawford county have the uniqe position of having the Marcelus being drilled just south of us and the Utica being drilled to the West of us in Ohio.  I was told that the Crawford County Landowners grop plans on trying to lease the shale layers individually. This makes sense when you look at it from a financial standpoint.

@Randy, I didn't get an email from you, so if you could please try to send it again it would be greatly appreciated.
