Shell is getting active again in Mercer County, they were at my brothers farm on Saturday for about 2 hours trying to get him to sign a lease paper.

And now that prices are up, we have "slow drilling" achieving the specific purpose of controlling "markets and convincing landowners to lease cheap".  I detect a recurring theme here:-).

The myth of low gas prices has passed now that gas in in the $4/mcf range, a comfortable price for gas that can be brought to the wellhead for $1/mcf by the producer.

This was accomplished by the industry by slowing down the drilling - only drilling wells in most areas that are necessary to hold the lease beyond the primary term.

Prices are not likely to rise to a level that allows alternative fuels to be competitive - say $6/mcf -  at least not until markets are expanded to absorb the production.

Of course the low prices were for the specific purpose of expanding markets and convincing land owners to lease cheap.

Drove past the Staab well tonight and it looks like they are gearing up to start fracking. Allot of equipment has been moved in  and there was 10 to 15 Halliburton guys standing around telling stories. I am guessing the first part of the week they will start.

I agree, I dont think CX is going to get us an offer anytime soon. I think they will continue to tell everyone about all the interest they are getting to keep people from leaving their group. I have no hard feeling against CX, just dont think any companies are doing any major leasing right now. Whoever stays with CX I wish them well and hope they are able to sign a good lease that is right for them. Its not just Crawford County that nobody is doing much leasing, in Mercer and Venango  Counties its the same way.

Perhaps I went overboard about the marketplace. It is my perception, right or wrong, that the producers know where you are and that properties are available for lease.
I am going to do some guessing that may be entirely "out of order."
It may be that in certain areas the companies with the old leases that are not contiguous have sufficient control that others will not come.
With that effective control of areas, they do not need to be in a hurry to fill in the blanks between properties. It is unlikely that anyone will come into those areas - other than opportunists who will acquire intervening properties as cheaply as possible to to profitably sell them to the producer in control.
The producer in control must be convinced, at some point that landowners have banded together and will not sell except as a group.
The producer in "control" needs all of the intervening properties to effectively operate and at some point one deal will be the way to go rather than little groups and individual property.
It is likely to be a while before real operations in the shales move to NW PA. Right now, its exploratory wells and wells to hold leases beyond the primary term.
Heaviest current activity appears to be in the south, like the the $billion+ plant in Cadiz OH.
Sometime in the next 100 years you can expect some substantial activity - in each of the several layers of the earth capable of producing.
If I am wrong about the waiting, there should be know objection to an annual advance minimum royalty clause in any future lease. Landowners should be compensated for waiting if the companies are buying reserves for future development.

Sam I understand what you are saying BUT, Lets say I have a 2012 Cadillac that I want to sell so I park it by the road in front of my house with no for sale sign in it. Some one might stop and say is that car for sale. If I put a sign in it more people know that it is for sale so my chances of selling it go up immensely. Now if my buddy knows I want to sell it and he says I have a friend Named Sam Douglass that is looking for a 2012 Cadillac here is his number you should call him. Now if indeed you are looking for a car like that and you didn't know I wanted to sell mine you would probably never buy it but now you know it is for sale my chances went up another level. Just my thoughts.
